How to watch the Marvel movies in order

Updated October 21, 2026 · 45 min read · 69 titles · 346 hours

Watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe in release order on a first pass, starting with Iron Man (2008): the films were written for audiences who had seen the previous release, so cameos, post-credit scenes and Infinity Stone reveals land as intended. Chronological order, starting with Captain America: The First Avenger, works better on a rewatch.

Release or chronological: which order is best?

Release order and story order disagree on 68 titles here. In release order you start with Iron Man (2008); in story order you start with Eyes of Wakanda, set in Ancient Wakanda, which came out 17 years later.

First time through, watch in release order. That is how the twists, returning characters and callbacks were built to land, and later entries assume you have seen the earlier ones. On a rewatch, try story order. It turns the Marvel Cinematic Universe into one continuous story and makes the prequels play as setup instead of backstory.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe also runs a separate continuity: The Defenders Saga. It has its own line on the timeline, so you can watch it on its own without breaking the main story.

Marvel box office and budgets

The 37 Marvel films with reported numbers have grossed $34.6 billion worldwide on about $7.42 billion in combined budgets, roughly 4.7 times what they cost. The biggest is Avengers: Endgame at $2.94 billion, 8% of the franchise's total on its own, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($2.52 billion) and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.05 billion).

Measured against what it cost, the best return belongs to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which made 11 times its $225 million budget. The weakest was The Marvels at 75% of its $275 million budget. As a rule of thumb, a film needs about two and a half times its budget at the box office to cover marketing and the theaters' cut.
