Pixar recap: the story so far

Updated October 21, 2026 · 31 titles · spoilers for everything below

Pixar's films are mostly standalone stories, from Toy Story in 1995, the first fully computer-animated feature, to originals like Up, Coco and Soul. A few have grown into series with their own continuity: Toy Story, Cars, Monsters, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles and Inside Out. The newest, Toy Story 5, sends Jessie to win Bonnie back from a tablet, while Woody leaves again with Bo Peep.

Toy Story recap

Andy's toys come to life when no one is watching, and his favorite, the cowboy doll Woody, leads them. At Andy's birthday party, Andy gets Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger action figure who believes he really is a space ranger, and Buzz quickly takes Woody's place as favorite. Jealous, Woody tries to knock Buzz behind the desk, but Buzz falls out the window, and the other toys turn on Woody. Woody and Buzz end up lost at a gas station, ride a pizza truck to Pizza Planet, and are won from a claw machine by Sid, Andy's toy-torturing neighbor. In Sid's house, Buzz sees a TV advert and realises he is just a toy; he loses an arm trying to fly. Sid plans to strap Buzz to a rocket and blow him up.

How Toy Story ends

Woody rallies Sid's mutant toys, who come to life in front of Sid and scare him out of torturing toys forever. Woody and Buzz chase Andy's moving van, and when they cannot catch it, Woody lights Buzz's rocket; they launch into the air and Buzz opens his wings to glide them into the car. At Christmas in the new house, Andy gets a puppy, and Woody and Buzz are now friends.

A Bug's Life recap

Every year a colony of ants on Ant Island must gather food for a gang of grasshoppers led by the cruel Hopper. The clumsy inventor Flik accidentally knocks the offering into a stream, and Hopper demands double by the end of the season. Flik volunteers to find warriors to fight the grasshoppers. In the city he hires a troupe of out-of-work circus bugs, including a ladybug, a stick insect, a black widow and a caterpillar, who think they are being booked for a show. When they all realise the mistake, the circus bugs stay anyway after saving Princess Dot, the queen's youngest daughter, from a bird. Flik plans to scare the grasshoppers off with a fake bird, and the colony builds it instead of gathering food. The circus bugs' real identity comes out, and the colony turns on Flik.

How A Bug's Life ends

Dot persuades Flik to come back when Hopper takes over the colony. The fake bird almost works until it catches fire. Flik stands up to Hopper and tells the ants they outnumber the grasshoppers, and the colony fights back. Hopper chases Flik into a real bird's nest, and the bird feeds him to her chicks. Princess Atta becomes queen, Flik's inventions are celebrated, and the circus bugs leave.

Toy Story 2 recap

Andy leaves for cowboy camp, and Woody, his arm torn, is put on the shelf. Woody rescues the penguin Wheezy from a yard sale and is stolen by Al, a toy collector who owns Al's Toy Barn. In Al's apartment, Woody learns he is a valuable collectible from a 1950s TV show, Woody's Roundup, and meets the rest of the set: the cowgirl Jessie, the horse Bullseye and the Prospector, still in his box. Al plans to sell them to a toy museum in Japan, and they can only go as a complete set. Jessie tells Woody how her owner Emily outgrew her and gave her away. Woody decides to go to Japan to be admired forever. Buzz leads Rex, Hamm, Mr. Potato Head and Slinky across town to rescue him, getting mixed up with a new Buzz Lightyear toy and Emperor Zurg at the Toy Barn.

How Toy Story 2 ends

Buzz reminds Woody that he is a toy meant to be played with, and Woody chooses Andy. The Prospector, who has never been played with, stops him, but the toys stuff him into a little girl's backpack. At the airport, Woody and Buzz rescue Jessie from the plane as it taxis, and they ride Bullseye home. Andy accepts Jessie and Bullseye, and Woody is at peace with the fact that Andy will one day grow up.

Monsters, Inc. recap

Monstropolis is powered by children's screams, collected by monsters who sneak into bedrooms through closet doors, and children are believed to be toxic. James P. Sullivan, known as Sulley, is Monsters, Inc.'s top scarer, and his best friend Mike Wazowski is his assistant. The city faces an energy shortage because children are getting harder to scare. Sulley finds a door left out on the scare floor, and a little girl follows him into the monster world. He names her Boo and, with Mike, tries to hide her and send her home. They discover that their rival, Randall, and the company boss, Henry J. Waternoose, are building a machine to extract screams from kidnapped children. Waternoose banishes Sulley and Mike to the Himalayas, where they meet the Abominable Snowman.

How Monsters, Inc. ends

Sulley and Mike return, rescue Boo from the machine and chase her door through the vast vault of doors, sending Randall to a human world where he is beaten with a shovel. Mike and Sulley trick Waternoose into confessing on camera, and he is arrested. Sulley returns Boo home, and her door is shredded. Sulley realises laughter makes more energy than screams and turns the company to comedy. Mike rebuilds Boo's door, and Sulley walks through to see her again.

Post-credits scenes

Lightyear recap

Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear crash-lands an exploration ship on a hostile planet, stranding a thousand crew members. Blaming himself, he spends years test-flying a hyperspace fuel crystal, and each four-minute flight costs him four years. His commander and best friend, Alisha Hawthorne, grows old, marries and dies. Thanks to his robot cat Sox, Buzz finally succeeds, but returns to find the colony under siege by Emperor Zurg's robots. He joins a ragtag team of trainees: Alisha's granddaughter Izzy, Mo Morrison and the elderly parolee Darby Steel. They fight their way to Zurg's ship, where Zurg is revealed to be an older Buzz from an alternate future who wants the crystal to travel back and prevent the crash.

How Lightyear ends

Buzz refuses to erase the life the colonists built and destroys the crystal. The team defeats Zurg and his ship, and they return to the colony, which has learned to defend itself. Commander Burnside lets Buzz and his team form a new Space Ranger corps. The film opens with a note that this was Andy's favorite movie in 1995.

Post-credits scenes

There are three. During the credits, Commander Burnside brags about his laser shield after it vaporises a space bug. After the credits, DERIC, the ship's computer voice, finds everyone has left. At the very end, Zurg's lifeless body drifts in space and its eyes light up, hinting he may return.

Elemental recap

Fire elements Bernie and Cinder Lumen immigrate to Element City, where the water, earth and air elements live, and open a shop, the Fireplace. Their daughter Ember grows up to run it, though her temper keeps flaring at customers. During one outburst she bursts a pipe in the basement, and Wade Ripple, a sensitive city inspector made of water, gets swept in and writes up the shop, which would close it. Ember follows him to City Hall and convinces his boss, Gale, to drop the tickets if they find the source of leaks threatening Firetown. How Elemental ends

Bernie retires and hands Ember the shop, but she pulls away from Wade. The floodgate gives way and floods the Fireplace, and Wade evaporates protecting Ember. The night before a hockey camp where Riley hopes to impress the high school team, the Firehawks, a puberty alarm goes off and four new emotions arrive: Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment. Riley learns her best friends, Bree and Grace, will go to a different school, and Anxiety takes over to make her fit in with the older players and her hero, Val. Elio recap

Elio Solis, an eleven-year-old orphan, lives with his aunt Olga, an Air Force major who gave up her dream of being an astronaut to raise him. Lonely and fascinated by the Voyager probe, he wants to be abducted by aliens. After a fight with a bully, he sends a signal from the base that causes a blackout, and Olga sends him to camp. The aliens answer, and Elio is beamed up to the Communiverse, a gathering of alien civilizations, where the ambassadors mistake him for Earth's leader. The warlord Lord Grigon threatens to take the Communiverse by force, and Elio offers to negotiate in exchange for being made an ambassador, while a clone takes his place at home. Elio takes Grigon's son Glordon hostage, and the two boys become friends; Glordon does not want to be a warrior.

Hoppers recap

Mabel Tanaka grew up loving the glade near her grandmother's house, and as a college student she fights the mayor of Beaverton, Jerry Generazzo, who plans to run a beltway through it. Her biology professor, Dr. Sam Fairfax, has built Hoppers, technology that lets a human mind control a robotic animal. Mabel hops into a robotic beaver, escapes the lab, and is taken to George, the beaver king who leads the displaced animals. She discovers that Jerry is driving the animals away with fake trees that emit sounds only animals hear, and she grows close to George. She persuades the Animal Council, made up of the monarchs of the insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds, to act against Jerry, but they decide to assassinate him. Trying to stop them, Mabel accidentally kills the Insect Queen, and her son Titus takes over the Council. Mabel is unmasked to George, and Titus forces the scientists to build a robot copy of Jerry for him to control.

How Hoppers ends

Titus, posing as Jerry, plans to use the sound trees to kill the crowd at Jerry's re-election rally. Mabel and Jerry make peace and work with the animals and scientists to stop him. Mabel unmasks his robot, the Council turns on Titus, and the Amphibian King eats him. The animals break the dam to put out a wildfire. Jerry reroutes the beltway, the glade becomes a preserve, and Mabel graduates and works for Sam, still texting George.

Post-credits scenes

Yes. In a mid-credits scene, Loaf, Ellen and Tom pass Jerry's face mask around until a bird carries it off. After the credits, an old man who signed Mabel's petition opens his door to the new insect queen, whose ants deliver his groceries. Neither sets up a sequel.
