The story

When 11-year-old Riley moves to a new city, her Emotions team up to help her through the transition. Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness work together, but when Joy and Sadness get lost, they must journey through unfamiliar places to get back home.

Inside Out recap

Inside eleven-year-old Riley's mind, five emotions run her headquarters: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust. Joy is in charge and does not understand what Sadness is for. Riley's family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco, and on her first day at a new school, Sadness touches Riley's happy core memories, turning them sad. Joy and Sadness struggle over the memories and are sucked out of headquarters, leaving Fear, Anger and Disgust to run Riley. With her core memories gone, Riley's personality islands, family, friendship, hockey, honesty and goofball, start collapsing. Joy and Sadness travel through long-term memory, Imagination Land and the train of thought, helped by Bing Bong, Riley's forgotten imaginary friend. Anger puts the idea of running away to Minnesota into Riley's head.

Inside Out ending explained

Joy and Bing Bong fall into the memory dump, where Bing Bong lets himself fade so Joy can escape. Joy understands that Sadness is what lets Riley's parents know she needs help. Back at headquarters, Joy hands over the controls; Riley gets off the bus, goes home and cries to her parents, and a new core memory forms that is both happy and sad. The emotions get a bigger console, with a button labeled puberty.

Post-credits scenes

During the credits, the film peeks inside the heads of other characters, including Riley's teacher, a bus driver, a dog and a cat. There is no scene after the credits.
