Hans Zimmer recap: the story so far

Updated October 21, 2026 · 25 titles · spoilers for everything below

The Hans Zimmer collection gathers 25 films he scored between Rain Man in 1988 and F1 in 2025, from his first Oscar nomination to his second Oscar win. Born in Frankfurt in 1957, Zimmer came up through synthesizers and London pop before moving to Hollywood, where his studio, Remote Control Productions, trained a generation of film composers. His sound mixes orchestra and electronics, building tension from repeated rhythmic figures, massed low brass and slow crescendos rather than long melodies, and his partnerships with Ridley Scott, Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve run through the list.

Rain Man recap

Rain Man (1988) follows Charlie Babbitt, a hustling car dealer who discovers he has an autistic older brother who inherited their father's fortune. Barry Levinson directs. Charlie (Tom Cruise), deep in debt over a stalled shipment of Lamborghinis in Los Angeles, flies to Cincinnati for his estranged father's funeral and learns that the $3 million estate has gone to a trust. Its beneficiary is Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), a savant with extraordinary memory who lives at the Wallbrook institution. Charlie takes Raymond out to force a custody deal for half the money. Raymond refuses to fly, so the brothers drive across the country with Charlie's girlfriend Susanna (Valeria Golino), who later walks out. Raymond's fixed routines rule the journey. Charlie learns that the "Rain Man" he remembers from childhood was Raymond, sent away after an accident with a bath. In Las Vegas, Charlie uses Raymond's gift for counting cards to win at blackjack. Zimmer's "Leaving Wallbrook / On the Road" sets steel drums and synthesizers over the drive, giving the trip a light, rolling pulse.

How Rain Man ends

Rain Man ends with Raymond going back to Wallbrook, and Charlie, who has dropped his claim to the money, promising to visit. At a hearing with a court psychiatrist, Raymond cannot say what he wants, and Charlie stops pushing for custody, saying he only wants to be his brother. He puts Raymond on the train with his doctor and says he will see him in two weeks. The film won four Oscars, including Best Picture, and earned Zimmer his first nomination.

Thelma & Louise recap

Thelma & Louise (1991) follows two friends whose weekend trip turns into a flight from the law after one shoots a man assaulting the other. Ridley Scott directs from Callie Khouri's Oscar-winning script. Thelma Dickinson (Geena Davis), a housewife under the thumb of her controlling husband Darryl (Christopher McDonald), and Louise Sawyer (Susan Sarandon), a waitress, head for a cabin in the Arkansas mountains. At a roadside bar, Harlan, a man Thelma danced with, tries to rape her in the parking lot, and Louise shoots him dead. Afraid no one will believe them, they run for Mexico, with Louise refusing to cross Texas. Her boyfriend Jimmy (Michael Madsen) wires her savings, and the drifter J.D. (Brad Pitt), sleeps with Thelma and steals the money. Thelma robs a store to replace it. Detective Hal Slocumb (Harvey Keitel) tries to bring them in safely. The women lock a state trooper in his trunk and blow up a lewd trucker's tanker. The main theme, "Thunderbird", sets a twangy slide guitar over the open road and their growing sense of freedom.

How Thelma & Louise ends

Thelma & Louise ends with the two women, cornered at the edge of the Grand Canyon by police, choosing to keep going and driving off the rim. Hal runs after them as Thelma says to keep going, they kiss, and Louise floors the Thunderbird. The image freezes as the car sails out over the canyon. The film has no sequel.

The Lion King recap

Simba is the cub of Mufasa, king of the Pride Lands, and the heir to the throne. Mufasa's jealous brother Scar wants the crown. He sends Simba and his friend Nala to the elephant graveyard, where hyenas attack them before Mufasa rescues them. Then Scar sets up a wildebeest stampede in a gorge with Simba trapped below. Mufasa saves his son, but Scar throws him from a cliff to his death and tells Simba it was his fault, telling him to run away. Simba is found in the desert by Timon, a meerkat, and Pumbaa, a warthog, who teach him "hakuna matata", no worries. He grows up with them, while Scar and the hyenas ruin the Pride Lands. Years later Nala finds him and begs him to come home. The baboon Rafiki shows Simba that his father lives on in him, and the ghost of Mufasa tells him to remember who he is.

How The Lion King ends

Simba returns, defeats Scar, takes his place as king, and the Pride Lands recover. Scar admits he killed Mufasa, and in the battle Simba throws him from Pride Rock. Scar tries to blame the hyenas, who overhear him and turn on him at the foot of the rock. Simba climbs Pride Rock and roars as the rain puts out the fires. The rains return, and the film ends with Rafiki presenting Simba and Nala's cub to the gathered animals.

Crimson Tide recap

Crimson Tide (1995) pits a submarine captain against his executive officer over an order to launch nuclear missiles that may have been cancelled. Tony Scott directs. Russian ultranationalist rebels seize a missile base, and the ballistic missile submarine USS Alabama sails under Captain Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman) with a new executive officer, Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington), a Harvard-educated officer who distrusts reflexive force. An order arrives to launch a strike before the rebels can fuel their missiles. A second message starts coming in but is cut off when a rebel submarine attacks and the radio is damaged. Ramsey wants to fire on the first order; Hunter, as the second officer whose agreement is required, refuses until the second message is confirmed. Ramsey tries to relieve him, and Hunter has him confined for breaking protocol. The crew splits, with officers such as Lieutenant Peter Ince (Viggo Mortensen) caught between them, and control of the boat changes hands twice. The theme "Roll Tide" builds a male choir and synthesizers into a hymn of rising tension around the standoff.

How Crimson Tide ends

Crimson Tide ends with the repaired radio delivering an order to abort the launch, proving Hunter right. Ramsey, who had retaken the control room, hands command back to Hunter and goes to his cabin. A naval tribunal finds both men acted within their duties; Ramsey retires and recommends Hunter for command of his own boat. The film stands alone, and "Roll Tide" won Zimmer a Grammy.

The Rock recap

Brigadier General Francis Hummel, angry that families of marines killed in secret missions were never compensated, steals rockets loaded with VX nerve gas and takes 81 tourists hostage on Alcatraz. He demands $100 million or he will fire the rockets at San Francisco. The FBI sends a Navy SEAL team with Stanley Goodspeed, a chemical weapons expert, and John Mason, a British SAS agent imprisoned for decades without trial, the only man ever to escape from Alcatraz. Hummel's men kill the SEALs in an ambush, leaving Goodspeed and Mason to stop the rockets themselves. Mason tries to run but returns.

How The Rock ends

Hummel, never meaning to kill civilians, aborts the launches, and his own men turn on him and kill him. Goodspeed kills the remaining mercenaries, one of them with a VX bead, and disarms the last rocket by tearing out its guidance chips. He lights green flares to call off the air strike just in time. He tells the FBI that Mason died, and Mason gives him the location of secret government microfilm, which Goodspeed later collects.

The Prince of Egypt recap

To save her baby from Pharaoh Seti's order to kill Hebrew boys, a mother sets him adrift on the Nile, and Seti's queen adopts him as Moses. He grows up as the carefree brother of Rameses, heir to the throne. When his sister Miriam tells him the truth about his birth, Moses has a nightmare about the massacre, kills an Egyptian overseer who is beating a slave and flees into the desert. He marries Tzipporah, daughter of the priest Jethro, and lives as a shepherd until God speaks to him from a burning bush and sends him back to free the Hebrews. Rameses, now Pharaoh, refuses, and his priests Hotep and Huy match Moses' early signs. The plagues fall on Egypt one by one, and the last kills every firstborn, including Rameses' son.

How The Prince of Egypt ends

Broken, Rameses lets the Hebrews go, then changes his mind and chases them with his army. Moses parts the Red Sea, the Hebrews cross, and the waters close on the Egyptian soldiers. Rameses is thrown back onto the shore alone, screaming his brother's name. Moses says goodbye to him from the far side and later comes down from Mount Sinai carrying the Ten Commandments.

The Thin Red Line recap

The Thin Red Line (1998) follows a U.S. Army rifle company through the battle for Guadalcanal in 1942, told through the inner voices of its soldiers. Terrence Malick writes and directs, adapting James Jones's 1962 novel. Private Witt (Jim Caviezel), who has deserted to live among Melanesian islanders, is caught and returned to C Company, where First Sergeant Edward Welsh (Sean Penn) mocks his faith in a better world. The company lands and is ordered up a ridge of grassy hills held by Japanese bunkers. The ambitious Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Tall (Nick Nolte) demands a frontal attack; Captain James Staros (Elias Koteas) refuses to waste his men, and Tall later relieves him. Captain John Gaff (John Cusack) leads a small group that takes a bunker, and the company overruns a Japanese camp. Private Jack Bell (Ben Chaplin) lives on memories of his wife, who later writes asking for a divorce. "Journey to the Line" plays under that advance, a slow, repeated string figure that keeps climbing without release.

How The Thin Red Line ends

The Thin Red Line ends with Witt killed after drawing a Japanese patrol away from his comrades, and the company leaving the island by boat. Surrounded in a clearing, Witt raises his rifle and is shot. Welsh stands over his grave. A new commander, Captain Bosche (George Clooney), addresses the men, and they sail away as the voices go on asking questions. The novel was filmed once before, in 1964.

Gladiator recap

Gladiator (2000) follows Maximus, a Roman general betrayed by the new emperor, who fights his way back to Rome as a gladiator to take revenge. Ridley Scott directs. In 180 AD, after a victory in Germania, the dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) he wants him to rule until power can return to the Senate. His son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) smothers him, takes the throne, and orders Maximus executed and his wife and son killed. Maximus escapes, finds his family dead, and is sold to Proximo (Oliver Reed), a gladiator trainer in North Africa. Winning crowds with the African fighter Juba (Djimon Hounsou), he reaches the Colosseum, where he reveals himself to Commodus after a staged battle. Commodus's sister Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), once Maximus's love, plots with the senator Gracchus (Derek Jacobi) to free him to lead his old army. Commodus uncovers the plot, threatening Lucilla's son. "Now We Are Free", sung by co-composer Lisa Gerrard, carries Maximus home to the fields of the afterlife.

How Gladiator ends

Gladiator ends with Maximus killing Commodus in the arena and dying of a wound Commodus gave him beforehand. Commodus stabs the chained Maximus so the duel will be unequal, but Maximus still wins. Dying, he asks that his men be freed and that Rome become a republic again. He walks to his family in the afterlife, and Juba buries his figurines in the Colosseum sand. A sequel, Gladiator II (2024), follows Lucilla's son Lucius.

Black Hawk Down recap

Black Hawk Down (2001) recreates the 1993 battle of Mogadishu, when a U.S. raid to seize two warlord aides went wrong after two helicopters were shot down. Ridley Scott directs, adapting Mark Bowden's 1999 book. Army Rangers and Delta Force operators under Major General William Garrison (Sam Shepard) fly into the Somali capital on October 3 to capture lieutenants of the warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Staff Sergeant Matt Eversmann (Josh Hartnett) leads a Ranger squad for the first time; Sergeant First Class Norm "Hoot" Gibson (Eric Bana) is a Delta veteran; Specialist John Grimes (Ewan McGregor) is a clerk pressed into the fight. Private Todd Blackburn (Orlando Bloom) falls from a helicopter during the insertion. The capture succeeds, but militia fire brings down the Black Hawk Super Six-One and then Super Six-Four. A ground convoy under Lieutenant Colonel Danny McKnight (Tom Sizemore) gets lost in the streets, and the soldiers are pinned down overnight. Zimmer's score, in cues such as "Leave No Man Behind", drives the street fighting with electric guitar and drums alongside the Senegalese singer Baaba Maal.

How Black Hawk Down ends

Black Hawk Down ends with a United Nations relief column reaching the trapped soldiers at dawn and the survivors running the last stretch to a stadium on foot. Two Delta snipers die defending the crash site of Super Six-Four, whose pilot Michael Durant is captured. Eversmann tells a dead comrade he will tell his family. Closing titles report that 19 Americans and more than 1,000 Somalis died, and that Durant was released after 11 days.

Sherlock Holmes recap

Sherlock Holmes (2009) sends Arthur Conan Doyle's detective after an occultist lord who seems to have risen from the grave to take over Britain. Guy Ritchie directs. In 1890, Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) stop Lord Henry Blackwood (Mark Strong) during a ritual killing, and he is hanged. Watson is moving out to marry Mary Morstan (Kelly Reilly), leaving Holmes restless and bare-knuckle boxing for fun. Then Blackwood's tomb is found broken open from inside, and Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan) calls Holmes back. Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), the thief who once beat Holmes, returns asking him to find a missing man for a secret employer. Blackwood takes control of the secret Temple of the Four Orders after killing its leader, his father, and plans to murder Parliament. Holmes plays out fights in slow motion before throwing a punch. "Discombobulate" gives the film its sound: a jangling cimbalom, banjo and out-of-tune piano that match Holmes's scattered, lightning mind.

How Sherlock Holmes ends

Sherlock Holmes ends with Blackwood hanged from the half-built Tower Bridge and Holmes explaining every trick behind his magic. Holmes stops the cyanide device beneath Parliament and catches Blackwood high on the bridge, where Blackwood falls into chains and dies. Irene escapes, and Holmes learns her employer is Professor Moriarty, who has taken a key part of the device. A sequel, A Game of Shadows (2011), picks up that thread.

12 Years a Slave (2013) tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a free Black man from New York who is kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery in Louisiana. Steve McQueen directs, adapting Northup's 1853 memoir. Solomon (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a violinist and family man in Saratoga Springs, is lured to Washington by two men offering work, drugged and sold under the name Platt. His first owner, William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch), a preacher, values him, but the carpenter John Tibeats (Paul Dano) attacks him and has him strung from a tree, and Ford sells him to protect him. He passes to Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), a cruel cotton planter who preys on Patsey (Lupita Nyong'o), his most productive picker, while his wife (Sarah Paulson) torments her. Solomon trusts a white worker with a letter and is betrayed. Years later a Canadian carpenter, Samuel Bass (Brad Pitt), argues against slavery with Epps. The cue "Solomon" repeats a mournful string theme that holds his long endurance. The film stands alone.

How 12 Years a Slave ends

12 Years a Slave ends with Solomon freed in 1853 when a sheriff arrives with a shopkeeper who knew him in the North, after Bass secretly mailed his letter home. Patsey is left behind on the plantation. Solomon returns to his wife and children, meets a grandson, and apologises for his appearance. Dunkirk recap

Dunkirk (2017) follows the 1940 evacuation of British troops from France across three timelines on land, at sea and in the air. Christopher Nolan writes and directs. On the beach and mole, over one week, a young private, Tommy (Fionn Whitehead), tries ship after ship with Gibson (Aneurin Barnard), a silent soldier, and later Alex (Harry Styles), while Commander Bolton (Kenneth Branagh) oversees the loading. At sea, over one day, the civilian Mr. Dawson (Mark Rylance) takes his small boat Moonstone toward France with his son Peter and Peter's friend George, and they pick up a shell-shocked soldier (Cillian Murphy) who panics when he learns where they are headed and injures George. In the air, over one hour, the Spitfire pilot Farrier (Tom Hardy) fights German bombers with his fuel running low. Ships are sunk, and soldiers hide in a beached trawler as the tide rises. The storylines meet as the small boats arrive. In "Supermarine", the ticking of Nolan's own pocket watch and a constantly rising Shepard tone keep the tension climbing. The film stands alone.

How Dunkirk ends

Dunkirk ends with most of the army brought home, and Farrier landing his powerless Spitfire on the beach, burning it and being captured. He shoots down a last bomber while gliding. George has died of his injury, and Peter makes sure a local paper calls him a hero. Tommy and Alex reach England by train, and Tommy reads Churchill's speech from a newspaper. Bolton stays behind to help evacuate the French.

Maverick (Tom Cruise), still a captain after more than thirty years, wrecks a hypersonic test jet by pushing past its target speed, and his old rival Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer) has him sent to train the Navy's best graduates to destroy an underground uranium plant at the end of a defended canyon. Among them is Lieutenant Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), son of Maverick's late friend Goose, who resents Maverick for blocking his early application to the Naval Academy, and the cocky Jake "Hangman" Seresin (Glen Powell). Maverick rekindles a romance with Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly). After Iceman dies, Vice Admiral Beau "Cyclone" Simpson (Jon Hamm) removes Maverick, until Maverick flies the course himself faster than anyone thought possible. Harold Faltermeyer's "Top Gun Anthem" returns in the score Zimmer worked on with Lorne Balfe, carrying the same pride and nostalgia it gave the 1986 Top Gun, which this film follows.

How Top Gun: Maverick ends

Top Gun: Maverick ends with Maverick and Rooster escaping in a stolen F-14 and Hangman saving them from the last enemy fighter. Maverick sacrifices his own jet to protect Rooster after the strike, and Rooster disobeys orders to come back for him. Shot down, they take an old F-14 from the enemy base and fly home. Later Rooster helps Maverick work on his P-51 Mustang, and Maverick takes Penny flying. A third Top Gun is in development.

Dune: Part Two recap

Paul fights the Harkonnens alongside Chani and falls in love with her, while Stilgar believes Paul is the Lisan al Gaib, the messiah promised by the Bene Gesserit's planted prophecies. Jessica drinks the Water of Life to become the tribe's Reverend Mother, and through it, her unborn daughter Alia speaks to her. Paul rides a sandworm and takes the name Paul Muad'Dib Usul. Baron Harkonnen replaces his brutal nephew Rabban with his younger nephew Feyd-Rautha, a psychotic fighter the Bene Gesserit want to breed with Paul's line. Gurney Halleck returns, and Paul learns he himself is the Baron's grandson through his mother. After Feyd-Rautha destroys the Fremen's northern camp, Paul goes south and drinks the Water of Life, seeing a holy war that will burn the universe if he leads it.

How Dune: Part Two ends

F1 recap

F1 (2025) follows Sonny Hayes, a veteran racer coming back to Formula One three decades after a crash to save his old teammate's failing team. Joseph Kosinski directs. Sonny (Brad Pitt) has spent thirty years as a driver for hire since a 1993 crash at the Spanish Grand Prix. After he wins at Daytona, Rubén Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of the struggling APXGP team, asks him to drive, since the team must win one of the season's last nine races or be sold. Sonny clashes with the rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) and works with the technical director Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon). He bends the rules to get Joshua points. Joshua is injured at Monza and Sonny pulls him from the burning car. Board member Peter Banning (Tobias Menzies) secretly sabotages the team to force its sale, and Rubén learns that Sonny's old injuries leave him medically unfit to race. Zimmer's score, written with Steve Mazzaro, gives Sonny a recurring "gunslinger motif" that mixes orchestra and electronics as man and machine. The film stands alone.

How F1 ends

F1 ends with Sonny winning the final race of the season at Abu Dhabi, saving APXGP, then leaving to race in the Baja 1000. In a three-lap sprint after a red flag, Sonny holds off Lewis Hamilton so Joshua can lead, and when Joshua and Hamilton collide on the last lap Sonny takes his first Formula One win. Joshua turns down a Mercedes seat. Sonny says goodbye to Kate and the team, and when asked what he races for, he laughs.

Common questions

What is the Hans Zimmer story so far?
