The story

A murder in Paris’ Louvre Museum and cryptic clues in some of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous paintings lead to the discovery of a religious mystery. For 2,000 years a secret society closely guards information that — should it come to light — could rock the very foundations of Christianity.

The Da Vinci Code recap

The Da Vinci Code (2006) follows symbologist Robert Langdon, who is framed for a murder in the Louvre and races to decode clues about the Holy Grail. Ron Howard directs, adapting Dan Brown's 2003 novel. Langdon (Tom Hanks) is in Paris when the curator Jacques Saunière is shot by Silas (Paul Bettany), an albino monk serving a figure called the Teacher. Police captain Bezu Fache (Jean Reno) suspects Langdon, but the cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), Saunière's granddaughter, helps him escape. Saunière led the Priory of Sion, guardians of a secret that the Grail is the bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and a cryptex from a Swiss bank vault holds the next clue. They seek help from Sir Leigh Teabing (Ian McKellen), a British Grail scholar, and fly to London, where clues lead through Temple Church to Isaac Newton's tomb in Westminster Abbey. Bishop Aringarosa (Alfred Molina) of Opus Dei directs Silas. "Chevaliers de Sangreal" begins softly and builds to full orchestra and choir as Langdon reaches the last answer.

The Da Vinci Code ending explained

The Da Vinci Code ends with Langdon kneeling above the Louvre's small inverted glass pyramid, where he realises Mary Magdalene's remains lie. Teabing turns out to be the Teacher and is arrested after Langdon solves the final password, "apple". At Rosslyn Chapel, Sophie learns she is a descendant of Jesus and meets surviving family. Langdon returned in Angels & Demons (2009) and Inferno (2016).
