Dunkirk recap

Dunkirk (2017) follows the 1940 evacuation of British troops from France across three timelines on land, at sea and in the air. Christopher Nolan writes and directs. On the beach and mole, over one week, a young private, Tommy (Fionn Whitehead), tries ship after ship with Gibson (Aneurin Barnard), a silent soldier, and later Alex (Harry Styles), while Commander Bolton (Kenneth Branagh) oversees the loading. At sea, over one day, the civilian Mr. Dawson (Mark Rylance) takes his small boat Moonstone toward France with his son Peter and Peter's friend George, and they pick up a shell-shocked soldier (Cillian Murphy) who panics when he learns where they are headed and injures George. In the air, over one hour, the Spitfire pilot Farrier (Tom Hardy) fights German bombers with his fuel running low. Ships are sunk, and soldiers hide in a beached trawler as the tide rises. The storylines meet as the small boats arrive. In "Supermarine", the ticking of Nolan's own pocket watch and a constantly rising Shepard tone keep the tension climbing. The film stands alone.

Dunkirk ending explained

Dunkirk ends with most of the army brought home, and Farrier landing his powerless Spitfire on the beach, burning it and being captured. He shoots down a last bomber while gliding. George has died of his injury, and Peter makes sure a local paper calls him a hero. Tommy and Alex reach England by train, and Tommy reads Churchill's speech from a newspaper. Bolton stays behind to help evacuate the French.
