Top Gun: Maverick recap
Top Gun: Maverick (2022) brings Pete "Maverick" Mitchell back to the Top Gun school to train young pilots for a near-impossible strike mission. Joseph Kosinski directs. Maverick (Tom Cruise), still a captain after more than thirty years, wrecks a hypersonic test jet by pushing past its target speed, and his old rival Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer) has him sent to train the Navy's best graduates to destroy an underground uranium plant at the end of a defended canyon. Among them is Lieutenant Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), son of Maverick's late friend Goose, who resents Maverick for blocking his early application to the Naval Academy, and the cocky Jake "Hangman" Seresin (Glen Powell). Maverick rekindles a romance with Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly). After Iceman dies, Vice Admiral Beau "Cyclone" Simpson (Jon Hamm) removes Maverick, until Maverick flies the course himself faster than anyone thought possible. Harold Faltermeyer's "Top Gun Anthem" returns in the score Zimmer worked on with Lorne Balfe, carrying the same pride and nostalgia it gave the 1986 Top Gun, which this film follows.
Top Gun: Maverick ending explained

Maverick sacrifices his own jet to protect Rooster after the strike, and Rooster disobeys orders to come back for him. Shot down, they take an old F-14 from the enemy base and fly home. Later Rooster helps Maverick work on his P-51 Mustang, and Maverick takes Penny flying. A third Top Gun is in development.
