The story

Racing legend Sonny Hayes is coaxed out of retirement to lead a struggling Formula 1 team—and mentor a young hotshot driver—while chasing one more chance at glory.

F1 recap

F1 (2025) follows Sonny Hayes, a veteran racer coming back to Formula One three decades after a crash to save his old teammate's failing team. Joseph Kosinski directs. Sonny (Brad Pitt) has spent thirty years as a driver for hire since a 1993 crash at the Spanish Grand Prix. After he wins at Daytona, Rubén Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of the struggling APXGP team, asks him to drive, since the team must win one of the season's last nine races or be sold. Sonny clashes with the rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) and works with the technical director Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon). He bends the rules to get Joshua points. Joshua is injured at Monza and Sonny pulls him from the burning car. Board member Peter Banning (Tobias Menzies) secretly sabotages the team to force its sale, and Rubén learns that Sonny's old injuries leave him medically unfit to race. Zimmer's score, written with Steve Mazzaro, gives Sonny a recurring "gunslinger motif" that mixes orchestra and electronics as man and machine. The film stands alone.

F1 ending explained

F1 ends with Sonny winning the final race of the season at Abu Dhabi, saving APXGP, then leaving to race in the Baja 1000. In a three-lap sprint after a red flag, Sonny holds off Lewis Hamilton so Joshua can lead, and when Joshua and Hamilton collide on the last lap Sonny takes his first Formula One win. Joshua turns down a Mercedes seat. Sonny says goodbye to Kate and the team, and when asked what he races for, he laughs.
