Sherlock Holmes recap
Sherlock Holmes (2009) sends Arthur Conan Doyle's detective after an occultist lord who seems to have risen from the grave to take over Britain. Guy Ritchie directs. In 1890, Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) stop Lord Henry Blackwood (Mark Strong) during a ritual killing, and he is hanged. Watson is moving out to marry Mary Morstan (Kelly Reilly), leaving Holmes restless and bare-knuckle boxing for fun. Then Blackwood's tomb is found broken open from inside, and Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan) calls Holmes back. Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), the thief who once beat Holmes, returns asking him to find a missing man for a secret employer. Blackwood takes control of the secret Temple of the Four Orders after killing its leader, his father, and plans to murder Parliament. Holmes plays out fights in slow motion before throwing a punch. "Discombobulate" gives the film its sound: a jangling cimbalom, banjo and out-of-tune piano that match Holmes's scattered, lightning mind.
Sherlock Holmes ending explained
Sherlock Holmes ends with Blackwood hanged from the half-built Tower Bridge and Holmes explaining every trick behind his magic. Holmes stops the cyanide device beneath Parliament and catches Blackwood high on the bridge, where Blackwood falls into chains and dies. Irene escapes, and Holmes learns her employer is Professor Moriarty, who has taken a key part of the device. A sequel, A Game of Shadows (2011), picks up that thread.
