Nickelodeon's original cartoons, the Nicktoons, ran from Doug, Rugrats and The Ren and Stimpy Show in 1991 through Avatar: The Last Airbender in the mid 2000s. The shows are separate worlds with no shared story, built around kids, talking animals and odd small towns, and they are the core of 1990s and 2000s cartoon nostalgia. A few got finales or later revival films; most simply stopped.

Doug recap
Doug Funnie, eleven, moves with his family to Bluffington and writes about each day in his journal. His dog Porkchop acts as his conscience, his best friend is the blue-skinned Skeeter Valentine, and his crush is Patti Mayonnaise. Roger Klotz is the would-be bully, Judy is Doug's arty older sister, and the Bluff family runs much of the town. Episodes follow small worries, a school dance, a rumour, a fib that gets out of hand, which Doug blows up in daydreams where he becomes the superhero Quailman or the spy Smash Adams. The Nickelodeon run lasts four seasons, 1991 to 1994. Disney then buys the show and makes three more seasons for ABC from 1996 to 1999, first as Brand Spanking New! Doug and later Disney's Doug. Doug starts seventh grade at a new school, Roger's family gets rich, the voices change and the daydreams become less frequent. Doug's 1st Movie (1999) has Doug and Skeeter discover a creature living in polluted Lucky Duck Lake.
How Doug ends
The Nickelodeon run ends with "Doug Graduates" in January 1994: Doug finishes sixth grade and talks a reluctant Roger, and himself, into looking forward to the new school, then the Funnies take a cross-country road trip. The Disney version ends with "Doug's Marriage Madness" in 1999. Patti's father marries Ms. Krystal, Doug loses and chases down the wedding ring, Judy leaves for college, and Patti asks Doug on a real date. Doug fills the last page of his journal, and Porkchop gives him a new one.

Rugrats recap
Tommy Pickles, a brave one-year-old, leads his friends, the nervous Chuckie Finster and the twins Phil and Lil DeVille, on adventures around the house and backyard, armed with a screwdriver to open his playpen. The babies misread the adult world, and their spoiled three-year-old cousin Angelica bullies them and lies to them, since she can understand grown-ups. Tommy's father Stu is a toy inventor, his mother Didi follows parenting books, and Grandpa Lou dozes in front of the television; Susie Carmichael, who lives across the street, stands up to Angelica. The first 65 episodes run from 1991 to 1994; production then stops, and new episodes return from late 1996 after reruns make it a hit. The Rugrats Movie (1998) adds Tommy's baby brother Dil. Rugrats in Paris (2000) marries Chuckie's widowed father Chas to Kira, bringing in her daughter Kimi as Chuckie's new sister. A third film, Rugrats Go Wild (2003), crosses over with The Wild Thornberrys, and the series reaches nine seasons before it stops in 2004.
How Rugrats ends
Rugrats has no planned finale; the last new episode, "Hurricane Alice", airs in August 2004, with Phil and Lil mixing up a coming storm with a visiting girl named Alice. Two direct-to-video Tales from the Crib fairy-tale specials follow in 2005 and 2006. The characters continue as preteens in All Grown Up! (2003 to 2008), and a computer-animated Rugrats revival from the original creators runs on Paramount+ from 2021.

Rocko's Modern Life recap
Rocko, a polite wallaby who has moved from Australia to O-Town, tries to handle ordinary adult life: rent, jobs, laundry, shopping and bureaucracy. His friends are Heffer Wolfe, a big, cheerful steer raised by a family of wolves, and Filburt, a nervous turtle. His dog Spunky eats anything, and his next-door neighbours are the Bigheads, the bitter toad Ed and his warm wife Bev. Rocko works at a comic book shop, and much of O-Town is owned by the Conglom-O Corporation. The humour leans on satire of consumer culture and on jokes aimed over children's heads. Over four seasons, from 1993 to 1996, Filburt marries Dr. Paula Hutchison and they have children, and the Bigheads' son Ralph becomes a cartoonist with a hit show of his own.
How Rocko's Modern Life ends
The last episode to air on Nickelodeon is the Thanksgiving story "Turkey Time" in November 1996, but creator Joe Murray counts "Future Schlock" as the real finale: years later, Filburt's grown children find a banana in the fridge and ask their father what it is. The 2019 Netflix special Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling picks up the story. Rocko, Heffer and Filburt return after 20 years lost in space, Rocko works to bring back his favourite cartoon, and its creator, Ralph Bighead, is now Rachel, which her father Ed comes to accept.

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters recap
Under a city dump sits a school that trains young monsters to frighten humans. The show follows three students: Ickis, a small, jittery monster who can grow huge and who struggles to live up to his famous father Slickis; Oblina, a tall black and white striped top student from a wealthy family; and Krumm, who carries his eyeballs in his hands and fights with the smell of his armpits. Their headmaster, the Gromble, is a dramatic, temperamental figure in high heels, and the hall monitor Snorch enforces the rules. Each episode sends the trio up into the human world on assignments, where scares go wrong, they risk being seen, and they help each other through. The show runs four seasons, from 1994 to 1997, and stays episodic throughout, with recurring humans such as Simon, a monster hunter who keeps trying to prove monsters exist.
How Aaahh!!! Real Monsters ends
The final episode, "Rookie Monsters", airs in November 1997: trapped together in a trash compactor, Ickis, Oblina and Krumm look back on how they first met at the academy. It is a flashback episode rather than a farewell: there is no graduation, no final exam and no formal conclusion, and the three are still students when it ends. The show has not been revived.

Hey Arnold! recap
Arnold is a calm, kind fourth grader with a football-shaped head who lives with his grandparents Phil and Gertie in the Sunset Arms, a boarding house in the city of Hillwood full of odd tenants. He spends his days with his best friend Gerald and helps neighbours with their problems. Helga Pataki, a classmate from a neglectful family, bullies him in public and calls him Football Head, but she secretly loves him and writes poems to a shrine she keeps in her closet. The show runs five seasons, from 1996 to 2004, and mixes school stories with gentler episodes about the city's adults. Arnold's missing parents become a running thread. Hey Arnold! The Movie (2002) has the kids save the neighbourhood from a developer, and Helga confesses her feelings to Arnold on a rooftop before both agree to treat it as a moment of heat.
How Hey Arnold! ends
The last episode made, "The Journal", has Arnold find his father's journal, which tells how his parents Miles and Stella met, how he was born and why they left for San Lorenzo, ending on a map that sets up a sequel. That sequel was cancelled, so the series stops on a cliffhanger in 2004. It returns as the 2017 TV film Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie: Arnold's class travels to San Lorenzo, Helga's locket helps release the cure for a sleeping sickness, Arnold finds his parents, and he and Helga finally kiss.

The Angry Beavers recap
Norbert and Daggett Beaver are brothers who leave home at the start of the series and build their own dam in the woods near Wayouttatown. Norbert is the older, smoother, lazy one who gets most of the good luck; Daggett is loud, childish and easily upset, and the two fight constantly while staying close. Episodes are self-contained and often absurd, with B movie parodies built around the stars of the brothers' favourite films, mad scientists and invented holidays. Recurring characters include their neighbour Stump, a talking stump; Norbert's girlfriend Treeflower; and their friends Barry Bear and Bing. The series runs four seasons, from 1997 to 2003, with a handful of leftover episodes appearing later on Nicktoons. The humour leans on fourth wall jokes and references aimed at adults.
How The Angry Beavers ends
The Angry Beavers ends without a finale. The crew wrote one, "Bye Bye Beavers", in which the brothers learn by mail that their show is cancelled and react to being cartoon characters, but Nickelodeon stopped it during production because it showed the series ending. Only storyboards and a voice recording survive. The last regular episodes reached the air on Nicktoons in 2006, and no revival has been made.

CatDog recap
CatDog is a single creature with a cat's head at one end and a dog's at the other, and no tail or back legs. Cat is fussy, clever and always scheming for money and status; Dog is happy, impulsive and chases cars, garbage trucks and balls. They live in a fish-shaped house in Nearburg with Winslow, a small blue mouse who mocks them. The Greaser Dogs, led by the bulldog Cliff, beat them up whenever they get the chance, and Rancid Rabbit seems to own or manage every business in town, so Cat and Dog keep running into him at new jobs. Episodes turn on the brothers wanting opposite things at the same time. The show runs four seasons, from 1998 to 2005, with a long gap before the final batch of episodes.
How CatDog ends
CatDog ends without a formal finale; the last episode, "Vexed of Kin" and "Meat Dog's Friends", airs in June 2005. The closest thing to an origin story is the TV movie CatDog and the Great Parent Mystery (2000), in which the brothers go looking for their parents, find a frog and a Sasquatch who raised them as foster parents, and learn their real parents are still unknown before a tornado carries them home.

The Wild Thornberrys recap
Eliza Thornberry, twelve, travels the world with her family in the Comvee, a motor home that can cross rivers and deserts. Her father Nigel hosts a wildlife documentary, her mother Marianne films it, her older sister Debbie would rather be at a mall, and her adopted brother Donnie is a feral boy who speaks gibberish. Eliza can talk to animals, a gift from a shaman she freed from a spell, which she will lose if she tells anyone. Her best friend is Darwin, a nervous chimpanzee. Most episodes have Eliza help an animal in trouble, often from poachers, while hiding how she knows what it needs. The series runs five seasons, from 1998 to 2004, with The Origin of Donnie (2001), The Wild Thornberrys Movie (2002), in which Eliza rescues a cheetah cub from poachers, and the Rugrats Go Wild crossover (2003).
How The Wild Thornberrys ends
The series ends with "Eliza Unplugged" in June 2004. Shane, a young pop star who has been living with the Thornberrys, is ready to return to his old life, and after an argument and a search, Eliza tells him how she feels. He kisses her goodbye before his flight, and she watches the plane leave. There is no grand conclusion, and Eliza keeps her secret.

The Rugrats Movie recap
Didi gives birth to Tommy's little brother Dil, who cries constantly and grabs all of Tommy's toys. The babies decide to take Dil back to the hospital in the Reptar Wagon that Stu built for a toy contest, but a fight with Angelica sends the wagon racing through town with the babies aboard, and they end up lost in a forest. Tommy leads them toward a ranger's cabin, believing a magic "lizard" there can send them home. Circus monkeys from a wrecked train steal Dil, and Tommy's friends refuse to help, so he goes after his brother alone. During a storm, Tommy nearly gives up on Dil, but the two finally bond. Angelica tracks them down with the family dog Spike while the parents search with the news crews watching.
How The Rugrats Movie ends
On a broken bridge over a river, a wolf corners the babies and Spike fights it, and both fall over the edge. Stu crash-lands his flying glider at the cabin, and the babies, taking him for the "lizard", ask for Spike back instead of going home. Spike turns out to have survived, caught in the bridge struts, and the families are reunited.

SpongeBob SquarePants recap
SpongeBob SquarePants is a cheerful sea sponge who lives in a pineapple in the undersea town of Bikini Bottom with his pet snail Gary. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab for the money-loving crab Mr. Krabs, next to the miserable cashier Squidward, who lives next door and wants to be left alone. His best friend is Patrick Star, a starfish who lives under a rock, and his friend Sandy Cheeks is a squirrel from Texas who lives in an air dome. Plankton, who runs the empty Chum Bucket across the street with his computer wife Karen, keeps trying to steal the Krabby Patty formula, and SpongeBob keeps failing his boating exam with Mrs. Puff. The show is episodic and has run since 1999, with films in 2004, 2015, 2020 and 2025, a Sandy film in 2024, and the spin-offs Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show. Creator Stephen Hillenburg died in 2018.
How SpongeBob SquarePants ends
SpongeBob SquarePants has not ended. It has no finale and is still in production: season 17 began airing in June 2026, and Nickelodeon has renewed it for seasons 18 and 19. Because the show is episodic, nothing carries over from one episode to the next, so any season can be picked up at any point; SpongeBob still works at the Krusty Krab and still has not passed his boating test. The most recent film, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, came out in December 2025.

Rocket Power recap
Otto Rocket, his sister Reggie, and their friends Twister and Sam, nicknamed Squid, spend every day surfing, skateboarding, biking, snowboarding and playing street hockey in the beach town of Ocean Shores. Otto is talented and cocky and always wants to win; Reggie is sensible and runs her own zine; Twister is Otto's goofy best friend who films everything; and Sam, the new kid from Kansas, is cautious and good with computers. Their widowed father Raymundo runs the Shore Shack snack bar with his friend Tito, a Hawaiian who dispenses advice. The neighbourhood bullies are Twister's older brother Lars and his gang. Episodes centre on competitions, rivalries and lessons about fair play and friendship. The show runs four seasons, from 1999 to 2004, with longer TV movies such as Reggie's Big (Beach) Break and Island of the Menehune, in which a trip to Hawaii rekindles Raymundo's romance with Tito's cousin Noelani.
How Rocket Power ends
The series ends with "The Big Day" in July 2004. Raymundo is about to marry Noelani, and Otto and Reggie are helping plan the ceremony, but the date clashes with the opening of a new indoor skate park, and Otto tries to get the wedding moved before the family comes together for it. It closes the show on a family event rather than a competition. There has been no revival.

As Told by Ginger recap
Ginger Foutley is a thoughtful seventh grader in the town of Sheltered Shrubs who writes in her journal and keeps trying to fit in. Her best friends are the excitable Dodie and the anxious Macie, and the popular rich girl Courtney Gripling takes an interest in her, to the annoyance of Courtney's mean sidekick Miranda. Ginger lives with her divorced mother Lois, a nurse, and her little brother Carl, who runs schemes with his friend Hoodsey. Unlike most cartoons, the characters change clothes, age and move forward: the friends reach eighth grade in season 2, then high school in season 3. Ginger's long friendship with Darren, who loses his headgear and becomes popular, turns into a romance and a break-up, and Lois begins dating Dr. Dave. The show runs three seasons, from 2000 to 2006, though Nickelodeon aired only part of the last season, leaving the rest to Nicktoons and DVD.
How As Told by Ginger ends
The series finale, the TV movie "The Wedding Frame", has someone sabotaging Lois and Dr. Dave's wedding while Ginger questions her relationships with Darren and with Orion. It ends years later at a bookstore reading, where an adult Ginger, now an author, presents her book, As Told by Ginger. Her friends and family are there, Darren holds a red-haired baby, Ginger wears a wedding ring, and she thanks the audience.

The Fairly OddParents recap
Timmy Turner is a ten-year-old in Dimmsdale whose busy parents leave him with Vicky, a cruel babysitter. His fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda, disguised as goldfish, grant his wishes, which almost always backfire and must be undone, all under rules set by the muscle-bound fairy enforcer Jorgen Von Strangle. Mr. Crocker, his teacher, is convinced fairies exist and tries to prove it; Timmy loves Trixie Tang and hangs out with Chester and A.J.; and the Anti-Fairies and Pixies cause trouble in Fairy World. The show grew out of Oh Yeah! Cartoons shorts and runs from 2001. It is revived in 2008, when Cosmo and Wanda have a baby, Poof. Live-action TV movies follow from 2011, a fairy dog called Sparky joins in season 9, and in season 10 Timmy has to share his godparents with an overachieving new neighbour, Chloe Carmichael.
How The Fairly OddParents ends
The original series ends without a finale; the last episodes of season 10 air quietly on Nicktoons in July 2017 after production stopped. Two follow-ups continue the story. The live-action Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder (2022) sends Cosmo and Wanda to Timmy's cousin Viv while Timmy is away at college, and the animated The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish (2024) gives them a new godchild, Hazel Wells, in Dimmsdale.

Invader Zim recap
Zim is a tiny, loud and incompetent soldier of the Irken Empire. After he wrecks a previous invasion, his leaders, the Almighty Tallest Red and Purple, send him to a distant planet, Earth, just to get rid of him. Zim believes he is on a real mission and disguises himself as a schoolboy with a wig and contact lenses, helped by GIR, a broken robot assistant who loves tacos and singing. Nobody on Earth notices he is an alien except his classmate Dib, a paranormal investigator everyone thinks is crazy. Dib's sister Gaz plays video games and ignores both of them, and their father, Professor Membrane, is a famous scientist who never believes Dib. Each episode is a new invasion plan that collapses, with a dark, grim tone. The series runs from 2001 to 2002, and later episodes bring in Tak, another Irken who wants revenge on Zim.
How Invader Zim ends
Nickelodeon cancels Invader Zim partway through its second season, so it ends without a finale; the completed but unaired episodes appear on Nicktoons in 2006. The story resumes in the 2019 Netflix film Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus, in which Zim launches "Phase 2" of his plan, moves Earth into the path of the Irken Armada and opens a rift between realities, before Dib and Professor Membrane send the planet home.
