Avatar: The Last Airbender recap

In a world where some people can bend water, earth, fire or air, the Fire Nation has waged war for a hundred years. Katara, a waterbender, and her brother Sokka find Aang frozen in an iceberg: he is the Avatar, the only person who can master all four elements, and the last surviving airbender, who fled before the Fire Nation wiped out his people. Book One: Water follows their journey to the North Pole so Aang and Katara can learn waterbending, chased by Zuko, the banished Fire Nation prince, and his uncle Iroh. Book Two: Earth adds the blind earthbender Toph, and ends with Ba Sing Se falling and Zuko siding with his sister Azula. Book Three: Fire has the group invade the Fire Nation; Zuko turns against his father, Fire Lord Ozai, and joins Aang as his firebending teacher. The series runs from 2005 to 2008.

Avatar: The Last Airbender ending explained

The four-part finale, "Sozin's Comet", has Aang face Fire Lord Ozai and, instead of killing him, take away his bending. Zuko and Katara defeat Azula, Zuko becomes Fire Lord, the war ends, and Aang and Katara kiss in Ba Sing Se. The world continues in The Legend of Korra (2012 to 2014), and a film about an adult Aang, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, was moved from theaters to Paramount+ for fall 2026.
