The story

Fantasia 2000 recap

A sequel to the 1940 Fantasia, this anthology sets animated shorts to classical music played by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, introduced by celebrity hosts. It opens with abstract butterflies to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Respighi's Pines of Rome follows a family of humpback whales that fly into the sky. Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue tells the stories of four New Yorkers in the 1930s, drawn in the style of Al Hirschfeld. Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 adapts The Steadfast Tin Soldier. Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals has a flamingo who plays with a yo-yo. The Sorcerer's Apprentice, with Mickey Mouse, returns from the original film. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance has Donald Duck as Noah's assistant loading animals onto the Ark; he and Daisy each believe the other was lost in the flood. Hosts between segments include Steve Martin, Bette Midler and Quincy Jones.

Fantasia 2000 ending explained

The film ends with Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, in which a forest spirit brings a land back to life after a volcanic firebird destroys it. The sprite, an elk and the forest return after the eruption, completing a cycle of death and renewal. In the segment before it, Donald and Daisy are reunited as the flood waters go down and the animals leave the Ark. The film closes the programme there, with no framing story to continue.
