Seventeen-year-old Bella Swan moves from Phoenix to the rainy town of Forks to live with her father Charlie, the police chief. At school she is drawn to Edward Cullen, a pale, strange classmate who seems repelled by her, then saves her from a skidding van by stopping it with his hand. Bella pieces together, with help from a Quileute legend told by her childhood friend Jacob Black, that Edward is a vampire. Edward admits it: his family, led by the doctor Carlisle, feed only on animals. He shows her how his skin sparkles in sunlight, and they fall in love, though he struggles with his thirst for her blood. Bella meets the Cullens and plays baseball with them in a thunderstorm, where three nomad vampires arrive. One, James, a tracker, decides to hunt Bella for sport.
How Twilight ends
The Cullens hide Bella in Phoenix, but James lures her to a ballet studio by pretending to hold her mother hostage, and bites her. Edward and his family kill James, and Edward sucks the venom out of Bella's blood, stopping her from turning. Edward takes Bella to the prom. James's mate Victoria watches them, planning revenge, which leads into New Moon.

On Bella's eighteenth birthday, she cuts her finger at the Cullens' house, and Edward's brother Jasper lunges at her. Edward decides Bella is not safe with him, tells her he does not love her, and the Cullens leave Forks. Bella falls into months of depression, and discovers that putting herself in danger makes her see visions of Edward. She grows close to Jacob, who helps her rebuild a pair of motorbikes, until he suddenly cuts her off: he has become a werewolf, one of a pack protecting the land from vampires. The pack fights off Victoria, who is hunting Bella. Bella cliff-dives for a thrill and nearly drowns. Edward's sister Alice sees a vision of the jump and assumes Bella died, and Edward, believing it, goes to the Volturi in Italy to ask them to kill him.
How The Twilight Saga: New Moon ends
Bella and Alice race to Volterra and stop Edward from exposing himself in the sun. The Volturi leader Aro lets them go on the condition that Bella is made a vampire. Edward tells Bella he left only to protect her and never stopped loving her. Bella asks the Cullens to vote, and they agree to turn her. Edward says he will do it himself if she marries him first. Jacob is left on the outside, leading into Eclipse.

A string of killings in Seattle turns out to be the work of newborn vampires, created by Victoria as an army to kill Bella. Edward keeps proposing, and Bella wants to be turned after graduation. Jacob confesses his love and kisses her, and Bella realises she has feelings for him too. Jasper explains his history with newborn armies, and the Cullens and the Quileute wolf pack agree to fight the newborns together. Bella hides on a mountain with Edward and Jacob, who keeps her warm in a snowstorm while Edward listens. Edward and Jacob argue over her and come to respect each other.
How The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ends
The Cullens and the wolves destroy the newborns in a clearing. Victoria and her follower Riley find Bella on the mountain, and Edward kills Victoria with Seth's help. Jacob is badly injured. The Volturi arrive and kill the last newborn, Bree, and note Bella is still human. Bella says goodbye to Jacob and tells Edward she will marry him and tell Charlie, setting up Breaking Dawn.

Bella gives birth to a daughter, Renesmee, and nearly dies; Edward injects his venom into her heart. Jacob, about to kill the baby, imprints on Renesmee instead, which ends the pack's threat under wolf law. Bella's body heals as she changes, and she opens her eyes, now red, as a vampire. Part 2 picks up from there.

Bella lowers her shield to show Edward her memories, and they look forward to forever. The saga ends here.
