The Lambert family, Josh, Renai and their sons Dalton and Foster, are haunted because Josh and Dalton can leave their bodies in sleep and travel into the Further, a dark realm of the dead full of spirits that want a way back in. The psychic Elise Rainier, with her assistants Specs and Tucker, helps them, and two prequels tell her own story before she meets the Lamberts. The Red Door, set nine years on, ends with Josh and the grown-up Dalton sealing the door to the Further, though its light flickers back on.

Insidious recap

Josh and Renai Lambert move into a new house with their three children. Their son Dalton falls from a ladder in the attic, and the next day he will not wake up; doctors can find nothing wrong, and he is said to be in a coma. Months later, with Dalton at home, Renai sees and hears frightening figures in the house, and the family moves. The haunting follows them. Josh's mother Lorraine brings in Elise Rainier, a psychic, and her assistants Specs and Tucker. Elise explains that Dalton is not in a coma: he can travel out of his body while asleep, and he has gone too far into the Further, where a red-faced demon wants to use his empty body. Elise reveals that Josh has the same gift, which was suppressed when he was a boy because an old woman spirit pursued him.

How Insidious ends

Josh goes into the Further and rescues Dalton from the demon's lair, and they return to their bodies. The family seems safe, but when Elise photographs Josh, she sees the old woman in him and is strangled. Renai finds Elise dead and a photograph that shows the old woman, and Josh, possessed, puts his hand on her shoulder.

Insidious: Chapter 2 recap

In 1986, Lorraine calls in a young Elise to help Josh, who is haunted by an old woman, and Elise suppresses his gift. In 2010, picking up right after the first film, the police question Renai about Elise's death. The family moves in with Lorraine, and the haunting continues there, as the possessed Josh slowly falls apart and turns violent. Specs and Tucker work with Carl, Elise's old partner, who reaches Elise's spirit. They trace the old woman to the Crane family. She is Parker Crane, a hospital patient abused by his mother into dressing as a woman and murdering fifteen women as the Bride in Black. Parker's spirit has taken over Josh's body, while the real Josh is trapped in the Further.

How Insidious: Chapter 2 ends

The possessed Josh attacks his family, and in the Further, Dalton, the real Josh and Elise's spirit find Parker's house. Elise destroys the spirit of Parker's mother, Josh regains his body, and Carl suppresses Josh and Dalton's memories. Specs and Tucker visit a family with a girl in an unexplained coma, and Elise's spirit sees something behind her.

Insidious: Chapter 3 recap

Several years before the Lamberts, Quinn Brenner, a teenager in Seattle, asks the retired Elise Rainier to contact her late mother. Elise is reluctant, having stopped using her gift because of a demon that threatens her life, and warns Quinn not to try to reach her mother alone. Quinn is hit by a car after seeing a figure wave at her, breaking both legs. Bedridden in her family's apartment, she is tormented by a demon called the Man Who Can't Breathe, who wears an oxygen mask. Her father Sean calls in two amateur ghost hunters, Specs and Tucker, who are no help. Elise agrees to enter the Further to save Quinn and faces both the Bride in Black and the demon, which disguises itself as her late husband.

How Insidious: Chapter 3 ends

Elise realises Quinn must fight the demon herself. With help from her mother's spirit, Quinn pulls off its mask and destroys it, and returns to her body. Elise goes into business with Specs and Tucker. At home, her dog barks at something unseen, and a red-faced demon watches from behind her.

Nine years after the first two films, Josh and Dalton have had their memories of the Further suppressed. Josh and Renai have divorced, Lorraine has just died, and Josh and Dalton barely speak.
