The story

The prehistoric Croods family live in a particularly dangerous moment in time. Patriarch Grug, his mate Ugga, teenage daughter Eep, son Thunk, and feisty Gran gather food by day and huddle together in a cave at night. When a more evolved caveman named Guy arrives on the scene, Grug is distrustful, but it soon becomes apparent that Guy is correct about the impending destruction of their world.

The Croods recap

The Croods are a cave family led by Grug, whose rule is that anything new is dangerous. His teenage daughter Eep sneaks out and meets Guy, a resourceful young man with fire and a pet sloth, Belt, who warns that the world is ending. An earthquake destroys the family's cave, and the Croods follow Guy toward the mountains he calls "Tomorrow". Along the way Guy's ideas win over everyone except Grug, who feels his family slipping away from him. Guy tells the family his parents died in tar and told him to go toward the light. The land around them breaks apart, and they reach a chasm they cannot cross.

The Croods ending explained

Grug throws each member of his family, and Guy, across the gap, staying behind alone. Using fire and a stretched carcass, he builds a crude balloon and flies over to rejoin them. The family settle on a beautiful coast, with Grug now open to new ideas and Eep and Guy a couple. The Croods: A New Age continues the story.
