Lucky Prescott's mother Milagro, a trick rider, died in a fall when Lucky was small. Years later Lucky lives in an eastern city with her aunt Cora and grandfather, and after a mishap she is sent to spend the summer with her distant father Jim in the frontier town of Miradero. On the train she sees a wild mustang being mistreated by the wrangler Hendricks and names him Spirit. In Miradero she befriends the riders Pru and Abigail, and the three earn Spirit's trust. Lucky learns she shares her mother's talent. Hendricks and his men round up Spirit's herd to sell them, and Lucky sets off with her friends to stop them.
