The story
On her 13th birthday, Marnie learns she's a witch, discovers a secret portal, and is transported to Halloweentown — a magical place where ghosts and ghouls, witches and werewolves live apart from the human world. But she soon finds herself battling wicked warlocks, evil curses, and endless surprises.
Halloweentown recap
Gwen Piper bans Halloween in her house and raises her children, Marnie, Dylan and Sophie, as ordinary mortals. Their grandmother Aggie visits every October and tells Marnie she is a witch who must start training before her 13th birthday or lose her powers for good. When Aggie leaves, the three children follow her onto a magic bus to Halloweentown, a town where monsters, witches and goblins live. Residents there have been disappearing, and a hooded figure is behind it. Aggie needs Merlin's talisman to stop him, so the family, joined by Gwen, gathers ingredients and allies around town, including Benny, a skeleton cab driver, and Luke, a goblin disguised as a handsome boy. The town's mayor, Kalabar, an old flame of Gwen's, keeps turning up.
Halloweentown ending explained
The hooded demon is Kalabar, who wants to rule both the magic and mortal worlds. He freezes Aggie and Gwen, but Marnie drops the talisman into the giant jack-o'-lantern in the town square, the light breaks his spells, and the family destroys him. Aggie decides to stay with the Pipers for a while, and Gwen agrees to let Marnie train as a witch. The story continues in Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge (2001), Halloweentown High (2004) and Return to Halloweentown (2006).
