Doctor Sleep recap

Doctor Sleep (2019) follows Danny Torrance, the boy from The Shining, now a troubled alcoholic adult who must protect a girl with a powerful shine. Mike Flanagan directs Ewan McGregor as Dan, Kyliegh Curran as Abra Stone and Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat. Dan drifts to a small New Hampshire town, gets sober with help from Billy Freeman (Cliff Curtis) and works at a hospice, where he uses his gift to comfort the dying, earning the nickname Doctor Sleep. The ghost of Dick Hallorann (Carl Lumbly) advises him. Abra senses a murder of a boy by the True Knot, a group of near-immortal travellers led by Rose who torture psychic children to feed on their "steam". She reaches out to Dan, and Rose learns about Abra and wants her. Dan and Abra ambush the Knot in the woods, but Billy is killed and Rose escapes. Dan decides to take Abra to the place where his own power is strongest: the Overlook.

Doctor Sleep ending explained

Doctor Sleep ends with Dan dying as the Overlook burns. At the abandoned hotel, Dan wakes its ghosts, and they devour Rose. The hotel tries to possess Dan as it did his father, and he overrides the boiler and dies in the blaze while Abra escapes. Later his ghost visits Abra. In the novel, the Overlook is already gone, Dan survives, and the climax takes place at the campground on its site.
