Absentia recap
Absentia (2011) is Mike Flanagan's first feature, written, edited and directed by him and funded through Kickstarter, with Courtney Bell as Tricia. Seven years after her husband Daniel vanished, the pregnant Tricia is finally having him declared dead in absentia, and her younger sister Callie, a recovering addict, comes to stay. Tricia is haunted by nightmares of Daniel, and Callie meets a gaunt man in a tunnel near the house who is shocked she can see him. Then Daniel reappears, starved and terrified, unable to say where he has been, and the sisters realise something in the tunnel has been taking people.
How Absentia ends
The creature in the tunnel takes Tricia. Callie goes back to offer herself in trade, but the creature returns Tricia's unborn baby instead and takes Callie too, leaving only her shoe. The detective on the case chooses to believe both women simply left, and as he puts up missing posters, Callie watches him from the tunnel with the creature's limb resting on her shoulder.

Oculus recap
Oculus (2013) is Mike Flanagan's feature version of his own short film, with Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites as Kaylie and Tim Russell, siblings convinced an antique mirror destroyed their family. In 2002 their father bought the mirror for his office, and its hallucinations drove their parents to madness: their father shot their mother, then forced ten-year-old Tim's hand on the trigger to kill himself, and Tim was institutionalised. Eleven years later Tim is released, cured of believing in the supernatural, and Kaylie has tracked the mirror down through her job at an auction house. She fills the old house with cameras, timers and an anchor rigged to smash the mirror, to record its power and clear their names. The two timelines play side by side as the mirror turns their own senses against them.
How Oculus ends
The past and present blur until Tim and Kaylie relive the night their parents died. Tim releases the anchor to destroy the mirror without seeing that Kaylie is standing in front of it, and kills her. Police arrest Tim, who insists, as he did as a boy, that the mirror is to blame, and as he is taken away he sees Kaylie's ghost in the house with their parents.

Hush recap
Hush (2016) is a home-invasion thriller directed by Mike Flanagan and co-written with Kate Siegel, who plays Maddie Young, a horror writer who lost her hearing and voice to meningitis at thirteen and now lives alone in the woods. One night a masked man with a crossbow kills her neighbor at her glass door without Maddie hearing a thing. Realising she is deaf, he decides to toy with her: he steals her phone, sends her photos of herself from inside the house, cuts the power and punctures her car tires. A neighbor's boyfriend comes looking for his girlfriend, and the killer murders him too.
How Hush ends
Out of options, Maddie decides to fight. She shoots the killer in the shoulder with his own crossbow, and when he crashes through the bathroom skylight behind her, she stabs him, blinds him with insecticide and sets off her strobing smoke alarm. As he strangles her, she drives a corkscrew into his neck and kills him. She takes back her phone, calls 911, and waits on the porch with her cat as the police arrive.

Before I Wake recap
Before I Wake (2016) is Mike Flanagan's supernatural fantasy with Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane as Jessie and Mark Hobson, grieving parents who foster eight-year-old Cody (Jacob Tremblay) after their son Sean drowns. On his first night, butterflies fill the living room while Cody sleeps, and the couple learn that his dreams become real. Jessie uses home videos of Sean so that Cody dreams him back, but Cody's nightmares also come to life as "the Canker Man", who devours people. After Mark is taken, Jessie learns that Cody's earlier foster parents disappeared the same way.
How Before I Wake ends
Jessie finds Cody at his old orphanage, where his nightmare has taken over. When the Canker Man attacks, she shows it a butterfly pillow from Cody's mother's belongings and hugs it, and it turns into Cody. Reading his mother's journal, she realises "canker" is how Cody misheard "cancer": the monster is his fading memory of his mother as she died. Cody accepts Jessie as his new mother.

Ouija: Origin of Evil recap
Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) is Mike Flanagan's prequel to Ouija (2014), co-written with Jeff Howard, with Elizabeth Reaser as Alice Zander, a widowed fake medium in 1967 Los Angeles, Annalise Basso and Lulu Wilson as her daughters Lina and Doris, and Henry Thomas as Father Tom. Alice adds a Ouija board to her séances, and nine-year-old Doris starts hearing from a spirit she believes is her late father. The spirit leads her to hidden money that saves their home, and Alice is thrilled, but Lina finds pages Doris has written in fluent Polish and takes them to Father Tom, who discovers they were written by Marcus, a Polish prisoner a Nazi doctor experimented on in the house's basement during World War II.
How Ouija: Origin of Evil ends
Father Tom is possessed and killed, and the spirits overrun the house. Lina sews Doris's mouth shut to silence the voices but kills her, and Doris's ghost is reunited with her father. Possessed, Lina stabs her mother, who tells her it was not her fault, and Lina is committed for the murder. Alone in her cell, she draws a Ouija board in blood to reach Doris and summons something evil instead. A post-credits scene shows Lina, decades later, greeting a visitor who claims to be her niece.

Gerald's Game recap
Gerald's Game (2017) is Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's 1992 novel, long thought unfilmable, with Carla Gugino as Jessie Burlingame and Bruce Greenwood as her husband Gerald. At an isolated lake house, Gerald handcuffs Jessie to the bed for a game she quickly wants to stop; they argue, and he dies of a heart attack, leaving her chained without the key while a stray dog comes in through the open door. As hours pass, Jessie argues with hallucinations of Gerald and of a stronger version of herself, faces a buried memory of abuse by her father during a solar eclipse, and sees a deformed figure with a bag of bones she calls the Moonlight Man.
How Gerald's Game ends
Jessie breaks a glass, cuts her wrist and uses her own blood to slide her hand out of the cuff, tearing the skin. Six months later she writes to her twelve-year-old self and uses Gerald's insurance to help other survivors of abuse. The Moonlight Man turns out to be real: a grave robber and killer who had mutilated Gerald's body. At his arraignment he mocks her, but Jessie sees her father and Gerald in him, tells him he is so much smaller than she remembered, and walks out.

The Haunting of Hill House recap
The Haunting of Hill House (2018) is Mike Flanagan's ten-episode Netflix series, loosely based on Shirley Jackson's novel and the first of his Haunting anthology. In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain (Henry Thomas and Carla Gugino, with Timothy Hutton as the older Hugh) move their five children into Hill House to flip it, and the family flees after one terrible night that ends with Olivia's death. Twenty-six years later the siblings, Steven, Shirley, Theo, Luke and Nell, are scattered and still damaged, and when Nell dies at Hill House they are forced back together. The series cuts between the two timelines, one episode per sibling, with ghosts hidden in the backgrounds of many shots.
How The Haunting of Hill House ends
On the last night in 1992, Olivia, influenced by the house, tried to poison her children in the Red Room to "keep them safe"; Hugh saved Luke and Nell but not their friend Abigail, and Olivia threw herself from the staircase. In the present, the Red Room, the "stomach" of the house, traps the siblings in nightmares until Nell's ghost saves them. Hugh stays behind in the Red Room to be with Olivia and Nell forever, and two years later the siblings, reconciled, celebrate Luke's sobriety together.

Doctor Sleep recap
Doctor Sleep (2019) is Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's 2013 novel and a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, with Ewan McGregor as the grown-up Dan Torrance, Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat and Kyliegh Curran as Abra Stone. Haunted by the Overlook's ghosts, Dan drinks to dull his "shine" until he gets sober in New Hampshire and works at a hospice, comforting the dying. Abra, a girl whose shine is far stronger than his, reaches out to him. The True Knot, a cult of psychic vampires led by Rose, feeds on the "steam" of children with the shining, and after they murder a boy, they come hunting Abra.
How Doctor Sleep ends
Dan brings Abra to the abandoned Overlook Hotel, sets its boiler to overload, and releases the ghosts he has locked away in his mind; they devour Rose, then possess Dan, but he regains control long enough to keep the boiler from being shut off. The Overlook burns with Dan inside, and he sees himself as a boy comforted by his mother. Later Dan's spirit visits Abra, telling her to "shine on", and she locks away an Overlook ghost herself.

The Haunting of Bly Manor recap
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020) is the second of Mike Flanagan's Haunting series, adapted mostly from Henry James's The Turn of the Screw and told as a gothic romance. Victoria Pedretti plays Dani Clayton, a young American hired as au pair to Flora and Miles Wingrave, orphaned children living at their family's English country house. Dani starts seeing apparitions, the children behave strangely, and the housekeeper Hannah, the cook Owen and the gardener Jamie (Amelia Eve) are hiding what happened to the previous au pair, Rebecca Jessel, and the valet Peter Quint. Carla Gugino narrates the story years later at a wedding.
How The Haunting of Bly Manor ends
The house's first ghost, the Lady in the Lake, has trapped everyone who died at Bly for centuries. When she drags Flora toward the lake, Dani saves her by taking the Lady's spirit into herself, which frees the others. Dani and Jamie build a life together in America, but years later Dani feels the Lady taking over and returns to Bly to drown herself in the lake. The narrator is revealed to be the older Jamie, at Flora's wedding, who still leaves her door open each night in case Dani comes back.

Midnight Mass recap
Midnight Mass (2021) is a seven-episode Netflix series created and directed by Mike Flanagan, drawn from his Catholic upbringing. Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford) comes home to the dying fishing community of Crockett Island after four years in prison for killing a woman while driving drunk, at the same time as a charismatic young priest, Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), arrives to stand in for the island's elderly monsignor. Miracles begin: a girl in a wheelchair walks, and the old grow young. Kate Siegel plays Riley's childhood sweetheart Erin, and Samantha Sloyan the zealous parishioner Bev Keane.
How Midnight Mass ends
Father Paul is the old monsignor, made young by a winged creature he believes is an angel and has fed to the congregation through communion wine; at the Easter vigil he has the faithful drink poison so they will rise again, and they turn on the island. The survivors burn the boats and shelters so the turned cannot escape the sunrise, and the remaining townspeople gather to die singing "Nearer, My God, to Thee". Leeza and Warren escape by canoe, and Leeza can no longer feel her legs, a sign the miracles are over.

The Midnight Club recap
The Midnight Club (2022) is a Netflix series created by Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong from Christopher Pike's 1994 novel, with stories adapted from 27 other Pike books. At Brightcliffe, a hospice for terminally ill young people, eight residents meet every night at midnight to tell each other scary stories, and each episode dramatises one or two of them. Ilonka (Iman Benson) chose Brightcliffe because a former patient was cured there, and she starts digging into its past: a cult that once used the house, a hidden floor, and shadowy figures she and others keep seeing.
How The Midnight Club ends
The commune leader Shasta turns out to be Julia Jayne, the patient said to have been cured, and her healing ritual for Ilonka was really a murder-suicide meant to extend her own life; Dr. Stanton stops it. The club finishes its stories, a broken statue mends itself as if sent by a dead friend, and the founders of Brightcliffe and a cult tattoo on Dr. Stanton point to mysteries the season never answers. Netflix cancelled the series after one season.

The Fall of the House of Usher recap
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) is Mike Flanagan's eight-episode Netflix series that folds Edgar Allan Poe's stories into one tale of a pharmaceutical dynasty. Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood), the head of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, has lost all six of his children in two weeks. After the last funeral he invites C. Auguste Dupin, the prosecutor who spent his career trying to bring Fortunato down, to his childhood home and confesses everything: how he and his twin sister Madeline (Mary McDonnell) rose to power, and how each of his children died, every death shaped after a Poe story and attended by a mysterious woman named Verna (Carla Gugino).
How The Fall of the House of Usher ends
On New Year's Eve 1979, after walling their boss up alive, Roderick and Madeline made a deal with Verna: wealth and power in exchange for their entire bloodline dying before them, with the twins dying together. Roderick had killed Madeline before calling Dupin, but she was only apparently dead; she rises from the basement and strangles him as the house collapses. Juno inherits Fortunato and dissolves it into a drug rehab foundation, and Verna leaves a token on each Usher grave.

The Life of Chuck recap
The Life of Chuck (2024) is Mike Flanagan's film of a Stephen King novella, told in three acts in reverse order, with Tom Hiddleston as Charles "Chuck" Krantz, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Mark Hamill, narrated by Nick Offerman. In Act Three, the world is ending, the internet is gone, and billboards everywhere read "Charles Krantz: 39 Great Years! Thanks, Chuck!" Act Two jumps back nine months, as Chuck, an accountant, stops for a street drummer and dances with a stranger. Act One shows his childhood with his grandparents after his parents die, his love of dancing, and the cupola his grandfather forbids him to enter.
How The Life of Chuck ends
The end of the world is the end of Chuck: he is dying of a brain tumor at 39, and the universe was the one he contained. In Act One, after his grandfather dies, teenage Chuck finally opens the cupola and sees himself on his deathbed, recognising the scar on his hand. He refuses to be afraid and promises to live fully: "I am wonderful, I deserve to be wonderful, and I contain multitudes."
