Dune recap

In the year 10,191, Emperor Shaddam IV orders Duke Leto Atreides to take over the spice planet Arrakis from House Harkonnen, secretly planning for the Harkonnens and his own Sardaukar troops to destroy the Atreides there. The Bene Gesserit, an order of women breeding for a messiah, test Leto's son Paul with the gom jabbar, a pain box. On Arrakis, the Atreides are betrayed by their doctor, Yueh, and Baron Vladimir Harkonnen attacks. Leto dies, and Paul and his mother, Jessica, escape into the deep desert. They join the Fremen, the desert people, who see Paul as the promised messiah, Muad'Dib. Paul falls for Chani, drinks the Water of Life and survives, unlocking his powers, and leads the Fremen to ride giant sandworms and cut off the spice. His newborn sister, Alia, is strange and knowing from birth.

How Dune ends

Paul leads the Fremen on their sandworms in an assault on the emperor's forces at Arrakeen. Alia kills Baron Harkonnen with the gom jabbar, and Paul kills Feyd-Rautha, the baron's nephew, in a knife duel. Paul takes power over the emperor, then makes it rain on Arrakis, a sign that he is the Kwisatz Haderach, the being the Bene Gesserit hoped to create. The film ends there; Lynch never made a sequel.

Frank Herbert's Children of Dune recap

This three-part miniseries adapts the second and third novels. Twelve years after taking the throne, Emperor Paul Atreides has led a jihad that killed billions and is haunted by what he foresees. A conspiracy including Princess Irulan, the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild and the shapeshifter Scytale sends Paul a ghola, a regrown Duncan Idaho called Hayt. A bomb blinds Paul, but his visions let him see. Chani dies giving birth to twins, Leto II and Ghanima, and Paul walks into the desert as Fremen custom demands for the blind. Nine years later, Alia rules as regent, possessed by the memory of Baron Harkonnen. Princess Wensicia of House Corrino plots to kill the twins with trained tigers so her son Farad'n can take the throne. A blind Preacher, who is Paul, speaks against the religion built around him. Leto II covers himself in sandtrout, which give him strength and long life.

How Frank Herbert's Children of Dune ends

Leto II returns to Arrakeen with his new powers, and Alia, unable to fight the Baron inside her, throws herself from a window. Leto becomes emperor, beginning his long rule, and Ghanima is to marry Farad'n to unite the houses. The Preacher, Paul, is killed in the city after speaking against the priesthood. Valya Harkonnen is its Mother Superior, and her sister Tula runs the school.
