The Count of Monte Cristo recap
The Count of Monte Cristo (1934) is the first sound film of Dumas's novel, directed by Rowland V. Lee, with Robert Donat as Edmond Dantès and Elissa Landi as Mercedes. In 1815, Edmond carries a letter from the exiled Napoleon to Marseille and is arrested on the word of the second officer, Danglars. His friend Fernand Mondego wants Mercedes, and the magistrate de Villefort buries the case because the letter was for his own father. Edmond is sent without trial to the Château d'If, and Mercedes, told he is dead, marries Mondego. After eight years alone, the Abbé Faria tunnels into his cell, educates him and, dying in a cave-in, leaves him a treasure. Edmond escapes in Faria's burial shroud, finds the treasure on Monte Cristo and returns to Paris as the Count.
How The Count of Monte Cristo ends
The Count exposes Mondego as the man who betrayed Ali Pasha, defeats him in a duel and spares him, and Mondego takes his own life. Danglars is ruined by a false stock tip and loses his mind. Mercedes, who recognised Edmond at once, begs him to spare her son Albert, and their duel ends without injury. Villefort is put on trial, and Edmond, after first protecting Villefort's daughter Valentine, gives evidence of his corruption. With all his enemies destroyed, Edmond is reunited with Mercedes.

The Count of Monte Cristo recap
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) is Kevin Reynolds's film with Jim Caviezel as Edmond Dantès, Guy Pearce as Fernand Mondego, Richard Harris as the Abbé Faria and an early Henry Cavill as Albert; it keeps the novel's imprisonment and revenge but changes relationships and the ending. In 1815, Napoleon asks Edmond to carry a letter from Elba, and his jealous friend Fernand and the first mate Danglars inform on him. The magistrate Villefort, finding the letter is for his own father, has Edmond locked in the Château d'If, and Fernand kills Villefort's father in return for convincing Mercédès that Edmond is dead. After years in prison, Faria tunnels into Edmond's cell and trains him in learning and swordsmanship. Edmond escapes, wins the loyalty of the smuggler Jacopo, and finds the Spada treasure on Monte Cristo.
How The Count of Monte Cristo ends
Edmond lures his enemies with a fake shipment of treasure: Danglars is caught stealing and Villefort is tricked into admitting he had his father killed, and both are arrested. Mercédès recognises Edmond and reveals that her son Albert is his, which is why she married Fernand. Edmond lures Fernand to a ruined country estate with the promise of treasure and kills him in a fight to the death, then buys the Château d'If and, keeping his promise to Faria, leaves with Mercédès and Albert.
