Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo recap
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (2004) is a 24-episode anime from Gonzo, created by Mahiro Maeda, that sets Dumas's story in the year 5053 and tells it through Albert de Morcerf, the teenage son of one of the Count's enemies. On the Moon, Albert meets the mysterious Count, who rescues him from kidnappers, and Albert introduces him to Paris society: his father General Fernand de Morcerf, the banker Danglars and the prosecutor Villefort. The Count is Edmond Dantès, framed twenty years earlier by those men and imprisoned in the Château d'If, where he escaped with the help of Gankutsuou, an alien being that now shares his body. Its look blends Impressionism with ukiyo-e, with costumes by Anna Sui.
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo ending explained
The Count bankrupts Danglars and leaves him adrift in space, drives Villefort to ruin, and exposes Fernand with the help of Haydée, whose family Fernand betrayed. Albert's friend Franz dies in a duel with the Count, and Fernand stages a coup in Paris. Fully possessed by Gankutsuou, the Count tries to kill Albert, but Albert banishes the creature, and Edmond dies free of it; Fernand takes his own life. Five years later Earth is at peace with the Eastern Empire, Haydée rules her world, and Albert is reunited with Eugénie.
