Child's Play recap

Child's Play (1988) follows Andy Barclay, a six-year-old whose new Good Guy doll holds the soul of a dying strangler who used voodoo to escape his body. Tom Holland directs. Shot by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) in a Chicago toy store, Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif, who also voices the doll) chants his soul into a doll on the shelf. Widowed Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) buys it from a street peddler for her son Andy (Alex Vincent), and the doll introduces itself as Chucky. That night the babysitter falls from the window, and suspicion lands on Andy. Chucky takes Andy across town to kill the accomplice who abandoned him. Karen realises the doll talks without batteries, and Chucky learns from his old voodoo teacher that his doll body is turning human and his only way out is Andy, the first person he told his real name. It starts the series and leads into Child's Play 2.

How Child's Play ends

Child's Play ends at the Barclay apartment, where Chucky starts the ritual to take Andy's body before Karen and Norris arrive. They set the doll on fire and Karen shoots off its head and limbs, but the remains keep coming until Norris shoots it through the heart. Karen is later committed for backing Andy's story, which sets up Child's Play 2 and Andy's years in foster care.

Child's Play 2 recap

Child's Play 2 (1990) has the toy company rebuild Chucky to clear its name, and the revived doll goes straight after Andy Barclay, now in foster care. John Lafia directs from Don Mancini's script, set two years after the first film, with Alex Vincent back as Andy and Brad Dourif as Chucky. Andy's mother has been institutionalised, so he goes to foster parents Phil (Gerrit Graham) and Joanne Simpson (Jenny Agutter), who also look after Kyle (Christine Elise), a guarded teenager. Chucky gets their address from the foster center manager, Grace Poole (Grace Zabriskie), swaps places with the house's own Good Guy doll and buries it in the yard. He kills Andy's teacher and both foster parents, framing Andy each time. Kyle digs up the real doll and comes around. Chucky is racing the clock: his doll body is becoming human, and he needs Andy's body before he is trapped. It follows Child's Play.

How Child's Play 2 ends

Child's Play 2 ends at the Play Pals factory, where Chucky finally performs the ritual on Andy and it fails: he has stayed in the doll too long and is stuck. Andy and Kyle mangle him on the assembly line and drench him in molten plastic, and Kyle jams an air hose into his mouth until his head bursts. Child's Play 3 starts eight years later with his blood in a new batch of dolls.

Child's Play 3 recap

Child's Play 3 (1991) revives Chucky when his blood drips into the plastic for new dolls, and he tracks a 16-year-old Andy Barclay to military school. Jack Bender directs, and Justin Whalin takes over as Andy, set eight years after the second film. Chucky kills the Play Pals boss, mails himself to Kent Military School and is opened by Ronald Tyler (Jeremy Sylvers), an eight-year-old cadet. Since a new doll means a new chance, Chucky tells Tyler his name and aims for Tyler's body instead of Andy's. Andy, who falls for fellow cadet Kristin De Silva (Perrey Reeves), knows what the doll is but no one believes him. Chucky crushes a garbage collector, frightens the commandant into a fatal heart attack and slits the barber's throat, then swaps paint rounds for live ammunition before the school's war games. It follows Child's Play 2 and closes Andy's first run; Bride of Chucky picks up a month later.

How Child's Play 3 ends

Child's Play 3 ends at a carnival next to the academy, where Chucky drags Tyler into a haunted-house roller coaster for a last attempt at the ritual. Andy shoots him, and when the doll comes back he throws it into a giant fan that shreds it. De Silva is taken to hospital and Andy is led away by police. Bride of Chucky opens with those remains in an evidence locker.

Bride of Chucky recap

Bride of Chucky (1998) brings in Tiffany Valentine, Chucky's old girlfriend, who rebuilds him, gets killed by him and ends up in a bride doll herself. Ronny Yu directs, and the series shifts into dark comedy here. Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) buys Chucky's remains from a corrupt cop and revives him, but finding he never meant to marry her, she cages him and he electrocutes her and moves her soul into a doll. To get human bodies back they need the Heart of Damballa, an amulet buried with Charles Lee Ray in Hackensack, New Jersey. Tiffany pays her neighbour Jesse Miller (Nick Stabile) to drive the two dolls there with his girlfriend Jade Kincaid (Katherine Heigl), whose uncle, police chief Warren Kincaid (John Ritter), is the first to die. The young couple are blamed for the killings along the way while the dolls fall in love again. It moves the story away from Andy and leads to Seed of Chucky.

How Bride of Chucky ends

Bride of Chucky ends at Ray's grave, where Chucky gets the amulet and starts the ritual on Jesse and Jade. Tiffany turns on him and he stabs her; Jesse knocks him into the grave and Jade empties a gun into him. The couple are cleared, but Tiffany's body gives birth to a doll baby that attacks the detective, setting up Seed of Chucky.

Seed of Chucky recap

Seed of Chucky (2004) follows Glen, the doll child of Chucky and Tiffany, who flees a cruel British ventriloquist and revives his parents in Hollywood. Don Mancini directs for the first time, and the film leans fully into comedy. Glen (voiced by Billy Boyd) sees the dolls on television in a horror film starring Jennifer Tilly, who plays herself, and uses the Heart of Damballa to bring them back. Chucky (Brad Dourif) calls the child Glen while Tiffany calls them Glenda. Tiffany wants the family to quit killing, and plans to move herself into Tilly's body and Chucky into the rapper Redman's. Tiffany secretly impregnates Tilly with Chucky's seed so the baby can host their child, while Chucky takes Glen out to kill the paparazzo Pete Peters (John Waters). Glenda turns out to be a second, violent personality sharing the doll. It follows Bride of Chucky.

How Seed of Chucky ends

Seed of Chucky ends with Tilly giving birth to twins, room for both Glen and Glenda. Chucky decides he likes being a doll, kills Tiffany with an axe, and Glen hacks him apart. Five years later Tilly is raising the twins, and is revealed to be Tiffany in her body; Chucky's severed arm grabs Glen at a birthday party. Curse of Chucky moves on to a new family.

Curse of Chucky recap

Curse of Chucky (2013) delivers a Good Guy doll to the home of Nica Pierce, a woman who uses a wheelchair, and her mother is dead by morning. Don Mancini writes and directs, returning to straight horror, with Fiona Dourif as Nica and Brad Dourif as Chucky. After the funeral, Nica's sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti) arrives with her husband Ian (Brennan Elliott), their daughter Alice (Summer H. Howell), and their nanny Jill (Maitland McConnell), who is having an affair with Barb. Alice adopts the doll, and the family priest dies in a crash after Chucky poisons his food. Nica spots Charles Lee Ray in an old home video and works out who the doll really is. Chucky explains his history with her family: he loved Nica's mother, killed her father, and stabbed her mother while she was pregnant, which caused Nica's paralysis. It follows Seed of Chucky and starts the Pierce thread that runs through Cult of Chucky and the TV series.

How Curse of Chucky ends

Curse of Chucky ends with Nica framed for the killings and committed. A detective takes Chucky away and is killed by Tiffany, who mails the doll to Alice; Chucky smothers her grandmother and starts chanting his soul into Alice. Cult of Chucky picks up with Nica in the asylum and reveals what became of Alice. A stinger brings back Andy Barclay, played again by Alex Vincent.

Post-credits scenes

Yes. A post-credits scene shows Chucky mailed to an adult Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent), who shoots him with a shotgun.

Cult of Chucky recap

Cult of Chucky (2017) sends Chucky into the asylum where Nica Pierce is held for his murders, and several Chucky dolls are soon killing the patients. Don Mancini writes and directs, with Fiona Dourif as Nica, Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay, Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany and Brad Dourif voicing Chucky. After years of treatment, Nica now believes she killed her family herself. Her psychiatrist Dr. Foley (Michael Therriault), who abuses her, moves her to a medium-security ward and brings in a Good Guy doll for group sessions. Tiffany visits to say Alice has died and leaves a second doll. Patients start dying; Malcolm (Adam Hurtig), who has dissociative identity disorder, begins calling himself Charles. Andy, who has spent years torturing Chucky's living head, realises the doll has learned to split his soul across several bodies, and has himself committed to stop him. It follows Curse of Chucky and leads into the TV series.

How Cult of Chucky ends

Cult of Chucky ends with one piece of Chucky's soul taking Nica's body, letting her walk again; she kills Foley and leaves with Tiffany and a living Tiffany doll. Andy destroys one doll with a gun he had hidden in it but is locked in his cell as Nica drives away. The Chucky series continues from here, with Nica, Tiffany, Andy and Kyle all returning.

Post-credits scenes

Yes. In the unrated cut, a post-credits scene shows Kyle (Christine Elise) arriving at Andy's house to carry on torturing Chucky's head; the rated version leaves it out.

Child's Play recap

Child's Play (2019) remakes the first film around Buddi, a smart doll with its safety limits switched off, which bonds with a lonely boy and kills for him. Lars Klevberg directs, with Mark Hamill voicing Chucky. In a Vietnamese factory, a fired worker strips one Buddi of its safety protocols before killing himself. In Chicago, retail clerk Karen Barclay (Aubrey Plaza) brings the returned doll home for her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman), who has just moved with her into a new apartment. The doll names itself Chucky and helps Andy make friends, but it learns from everything around it, including a slasher film the kids watch, and takes Andy's wishes literally. It kills the family cat, then Karen's boyfriend Shane, and police detective Mike Norris (Brian Tyree Henry) starts to suspect Andy. It stands alone, with no link to the original continuity.

How Child's Play ends

Child's Play ends at the store where Karen works, where Chucky turns the other Buddi dolls on shoppers during a product launch and holds Karen hostage. Andy frees her, Norris shoots Chucky and Karen decapitates him, and the kids burn what is left. As the company recalls every Buddi, one doll in storage smiles with red eyes: Chucky has moved his program into it.

Chucky recap

Chucky (2021) brings the killer doll to Hackensack, New Jersey, where a gay 14-year-old buys him at a yard sale and is soon tied to a string of murders. Don Mancini created it for Syfy and USA Network, which aired it from 2021 to 2024 over three seasons and 24 episodes, with Brad Dourif voicing Chucky. Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur) teams up with Devon Evans (Björgvin Arnarson), a true-crime podcaster he falls for, and Lexy Cross (Alyvia Alyn Lind), the bully who becomes his friend. Flashbacks trace Charles Lee Ray's childhood in Hackensack. Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) and Kyle (Christine Elise) hunt the dolls, while Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) lives in Jennifer Tilly's body and Nica (Fiona Dourif) shares her body with a piece of Chucky. Season two moves the teens to a Catholic school where Ray grew up and brings back Glen and Glenda. Season three puts Chucky in the White House as the toy of the president's son. It follows Cult of Chucky.

How Chucky ends

Chucky ends with "Final Destination", in which Chucky takes over Jake's body, leads Devon and Lexy to Wendell Wilkins, the man who made the Good Guy dolls, and moves back into a doll. Caroline puts Tiffany in a Belle doll and drives off with both, after also trapping Jake, Devon and Lexy in marionettes. Syfy and USA cancelled the series in September 2024, so that cliffhanger was never resolved.
