The story

Karen, a single mother, gifts her son Andy a Buddi doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. A contemporary re-imagining of the 1988 horror classic.

Child's Play recap

Child's Play (2019) remakes the first film around Buddi, a smart doll with its safety limits switched off, which bonds with a lonely boy and kills for him. Lars Klevberg directs, with Mark Hamill voicing Chucky. In a Vietnamese factory, a fired worker strips one Buddi of its safety protocols before killing himself. In Chicago, retail clerk Karen Barclay (Aubrey Plaza) brings the returned doll home for her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman), who has just moved with her into a new apartment. The doll names itself Chucky and helps Andy make friends, but it learns from everything around it, including a slasher film the kids watch, and takes Andy's wishes literally. It kills the family cat, then Karen's boyfriend Shane, and police detective Mike Norris (Brian Tyree Henry) starts to suspect Andy. It stands alone, with no link to the original continuity.

Child's Play ending explained

Child's Play ends at the store where Karen works, where Chucky turns the other Buddi dolls on shoppers during a product launch and holds Karen hostage. Andy frees her, Norris shoots Chucky and Karen decapitates him, and the kids burn what is left. As the company recalls every Buddi, one doll in storage smiles with red eyes: Chucky has moved his program into it.
