Wizards of Waverly Place is #20 of 23 in release order and #20 of 23 in chronological order in the Disney Channel Classics.

The story

Alex, Justin and Max Russo are not your ordinary kids - they're wizards in training! While their parents run the Waverly Sub Station, the siblings struggle to balance their ordinary lives while learning to master their extraordinary powers.

Wizards of Waverly Place recap

Alex, Justin and Max Russo live above their family's subway-themed sandwich shop in Greenwich Village and are all wizards in training. Their father Jerry gave up his powers to marry their mortal mother Theresa, and the rule is that only one sibling can keep their magic as an adult, decided by a family wizard competition. Alex is the lazy, scheming centre of the show, Justin is the rule-following overachiever, and Max is the clueless youngest. Alex's best friend Harper learns the secret in season 2 and later moves in. Alex dates Mason, a werewolf, and Justin falls for Juliet, a vampire, while Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie (2009) has Alex accidentally wish that her parents never met. In the last season, Alex and Justin reveal wizards to the world in what turns out to be a test, and both are demoted.

Wizards of Waverly Place ending explained

In the finale, "Who Will Be the Family Wizard?," Alex wins the competition and keeps her full powers. Justin keeps his magic by becoming headmaster of WizTech, and Max loses his powers but takes over the sandwich shop. The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex followed in 2013, and Wizards Beyond Waverly Place (2024 to 2026) brings back an adult Justin, with Alex as a guest, training a new young wizard; its short third season was announced as the last.
