The story
In 1996, brash L.A. detective John Spartan and maniac killer Simon Phoenix are both sentenced to decades in a cryogenic prison as punishment for a rescue mission gone wrong. When Phoenix escapes 36 years later to wreak havoc on the future, Spartan is awakened to capture his nemesis the old-fashioned way.
Demolition Man recap
In 1996, Los Angeles cop John Spartan captures the psychopath Simon Phoenix, but a busload of hostages dies in the process, and Spartan is sentenced to be frozen in a cryo-prison along with Phoenix. In 2032, Phoenix is thawed for parole and escapes into San Angeles, a peaceful, sterile society run by Dr. Raymond Cocteau, where swearing is fined and violence has disappeared. The police cannot cope, so they thaw Spartan to catch him. Spartan teams up with Lenina Huxley, a cop who loves the 20th century. Phoenix, it turns out, was programmed in prison to kill Edgar Friendly, the leader of the rebels living underground.
Demolition Man ending explained
Phoenix turns on Cocteau and kills him, then frees other frozen criminals. Spartan chases him to the cryo-prison, freezes him with liquid nitrogen and kicks his head off, and the prison explodes. Spartan suggests the people of San Angeles and the rebels meet each other halfway, and kisses Huxley.
