Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is #10 of 11 in release order and #2 of 11 in chronological order in the Wizarding World.

The story

Gellert Grindelwald has escaped imprisonment and has begun gathering followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one capable of putting a stop to him is the wizard he once called his closest friend, Albus Dumbledore. However, Dumbledore will need to seek help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald recap

In 1927, Grindelwald escapes custody. Albus Dumbledore, who cannot fight him himself, asks Newt to go to Paris, where Credence, alive, is searching for his real family with the circus performer Nagini, a woman cursed to become a snake. Tina, Jacob and Queenie follow; Jacob's memory has returned, and Queenie has enchanted him so they can marry against American law. Newt's former classmate Leta Lestrange, now engaged to his brother Theseus, is caught up in her family's secrets about a lost brother whom many believe Credence to be. Grindelwald recruits followers and holds a rally in a Paris mausoleum, promising wizards a world where they rule over Muggles.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ending explained

Leta reveals she accidentally drowned her baby brother long ago, so Credence is not a Lestrange. Grindelwald's rally ends in battle; Leta dies holding him back, and Queenie and Credence join him. Newt takes from Grindelwald a vial holding the blood pact that stops him and Dumbledore fighting each other. At Nurmengard, Grindelwald tells Credence his name is Aurelius Dumbledore, setting up the next film.
