The Grand Budapest Hotel recap

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) follows a fastidious concierge and his young lobby boy after he is framed for the murder of a rich old guest. In the 1930s in the fictional Zubrowka, Monsieur Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes) runs a mountain resort and romances its elderly clients, including Madame D. (Tilda Swinton). When she dies and leaves him the painting Boy with Apple, her son Dmitri (Adrien Brody) has him arrested. Gustave escapes prison with tools smuggled in pastries baked by Agatha (Saoirse Ronan), girlfriend of his protégé Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori). With help from a secret society of concierges, they chase the truth while Dmitri's hitman Jopling (Willem Dafoe) kills witnesses. The tale is nested inside a writer's 1968 conversation with the older Zero (F. Murray Abraham). Wes Anderson directs from a story he developed with Hugo Guinness. This eighth feature follows Moonrise Kingdom.

The Grand Budapest Hotel ending explained

The Grand Budapest Hotel ends with Gustave cleared and rich, and then killed. A second will turns up behind the painting naming Gustave as heir, proving Dmitri arranged his mother's murder. Zero becomes concierge and marries Agatha. On a train, soldiers stop Zero, Gustave defends him, and they shoot Gustave. The older Zero explains that Agatha and their son later died of Prussian grippe, and that he keeps the decaying hotel in her memory. Anderson credits the writings of Stefan Zweig as inspiration.
