Munich recap
Munich (2005) follows a Mossad agent leading a secret squad to kill the men Israel blames for the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics. Steven Spielberg directs a script by Tony Kushner and Eric Roth, based on George Jonas's book Vengeance. Avner Kaufman (Eric Bana) leaves his pregnant wife and officially resigns from Mossad so the operation can be denied. His handler Ephraim (Geoffrey Rush) gives him a list of eleven names and four men: driver Steve (Daniel Craig), toymaker turned bomb maker Robert (Mathieu Kassovitz), cleaner Carl (Ciarán Hinds) and forger Hans (Hanns Zischler). A French informant, Louis (Mathieu Amalric), sells them locations. They shoot a translator in Rome and bomb targets in Paris and Cyprus, then join commandos in a raid on Beirut. In Athens they share a safe house with Palestinian fighters, and Avner argues about homeland with one of them, Ali. Munich comes after War of the Worlds and before Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Munich ending explained
Munich ends with Avner refusing to return to Israel and his old life. The hunters become the hunted: Carl is killed by a contract killer, whom the others then execute, Hans is found stabbed and Robert dies in an explosion. A last try at the planner Ali Hassan Salameh fails. Haunted and paranoid, Avner settles with his family in Brooklyn. When Ephraim comes to bring him back, Avner invites him to break bread, and Ephraim declines. The final shot frames the Manhattan skyline with the World Trade Center. A title card says nine of the eleven men were killed.
