The Mist recap

The Mist (2007) traps a small Maine town's shoppers inside a supermarket as a thick mist full of monsters rolls in. Frank Darabont directs Thomas Jane as David Drayton, an artist who goes to the store in Bridgton with his young son Billy (Nathan Gamble) and his neighbour Brent Norton (Andre Braugher) after a storm. A bleeding man runs in screaming that something in the mist took his friend. Tentacles drag off a bag boy at the loading dock, and insects and flying creatures break through the windows. Norton leads a group out into the mist and they are never seen again. Inside, religious zealot Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden) convinces more and more frightened shoppers that God is punishing them, and her followers demand a sacrifice. A soldier reveals that the military's Arrowhead Project opened a door to another dimension, and the crowd feeds him to the creatures. Assistant manager Ollie Weeks (Toby Jones) shoots Carmody, and David leads a small group to his car.

The Mist ending explained

The Mist ends with David killing his son and the others, only for the mist to lift moments later. They drive until the gas runs out, surrounded by enormous creatures. With four bullets for five people, David shoots Billy, Amanda Dunfrey and the two others, then steps out to die. Tanks and soldiers emerge from the clearing mist, carrying survivors, including the woman who left the store early. The novella ends ambiguously, with David still driving south in the mist.
