King Richard recap
King Richard (2021) follows Richard Williams as he coaches his daughters Venus and Serena on the public courts of Compton toward tennis careers. Reinaldo Marcus Green directs the tennis biopic, with Venus and Serena Williams among its executive producers. Richard Williams (Will Smith) works as a security guard and has had a plan for the girls since before they were born. With his wife Oracene "Brandy" Price (Aunjanue Ellis), he drills Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton) daily and hands out brochures to find a coach. Paul Cohen (Tony Goldwyn) agrees to coach Venus for free, and she wins junior tournaments, but Richard pulls the girls from juniors to keep them grounded and fires Cohen. Rick Macci (Jon Bernthal) moves the family to Florida to train them, and Richard keeps them out of competition for years, wary of the burnout of Jennifer Capriati. Venus begs to turn pro. King Richard follows Ford v Ferrari and comes before Air.
King Richard ending explained
King Richard ends with Venus losing her second professional match to top seed Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in Oakland, after leading, and walking out to a crowd of fans. Richard, after an argument with Brandy, lets Venus enter, and the family turns down a $3 million Nike deal before she plays. She wins her first match. Against Sánchez Vicario, she leads until a long bathroom break shifts the match. Closing text and real footage follow the sisters' later careers. Will Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the role.
