The story
Robert Neville is a scientist who was unable to stop the spread of the terrible virus that was incurable and man-made. Immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and perhaps the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone.

In 2009 a genetically engineered cure for cancer mutates into a virus that kills most of humanity and turns most survivors into hairless, light-sensitive predators called Darkseekers. Three years later, Robert Neville, a US Army virologist who is immune, lives alone in Manhattan with his German Shepherd Samantha. By day he hunts deer, collects supplies, broadcasts radio messages and talks to mannequins; by night he hides in his fortified townhouse and runs experiments to find a cure, testing on infected rats and a captured Darkseeker. Flashbacks show the city being evacuated and his wife and daughter killed in a helicopter crash. The Darkseekers turn out to be more intelligent than he thought, and their leader sets a trap. Samantha is bitten and Neville has to kill her. He tries to drive into a Darkseeker pack and is saved by a survivor, Anna, and a boy, Ethan. It is the second of the Alone Trilogy, three films of one person cut off from everyone else.
I Am Legend ending explained
Neville finds the cure and blows himself up to save Anna and Ethan, who carry it to a survivors' colony. The Darkseekers attack the house and corner the three in Neville's lab, where he sees his captured subject is returning to human. He draws a vial of her blood, gives it to Anna, and hides her and Ethan in an old coal chute. Then he sets off a grenade, killing himself and the attackers. Anna and Ethan reach a walled survivors' town in Vermont, and Anna says Neville's cure makes him a legend.
