The story
To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the others, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
The First Purge recap
The New Founding Fathers, newly in power, run an experiment on Staten Island: residents are paid to stay home for a night of legal crime, and more if they take part. The test is designed by psychologist Dr. May Updale. Nya, an activist, opposes it, while her younger brother Isaiah wants revenge on a man who cut him. Her ex-boyfriend Dmitri, a drug kingpin, plans to stay out of it. At first, most residents throw parties instead of killing, so the NFFA sends in mercenaries disguised as gangs and the Ku Klux Klan to drive up the violence.
The First Purge ending explained
Updale learns of the mercenaries and is killed for objecting. Dmitri fights his way through a tower block to save Nya, Isaiah and the residents trapped inside, killing the mercenaries. The survivors walk out at dawn, but the experiment is declared a success and the Purge goes national.
