The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim recap

Eowyn narrates a story from 183 years before The Lord of the Rings. Hera is the headstrong daughter of Helm Hammerhand, King of Rohan. The Dunlending lord Freca asks for her hand for his son Wulf, her childhood friend, and when Helm refuses, the two kings fight and Helm kills Freca with a single punch. Wulf swears revenge. Years later, leading the Dunlendings from Isengard, he has Hera kidnapped; she is rescued, and he invades Rohan with the help of a traitor, Lord Thorne. Helm's sons Haleth and Hama are killed, and the Rohirrim retreat into the Hornburg for a long winter siege. Grief-stricken, Helm goes out alone at night to fight the enemy barehanded and is found frozen to death, standing. Hera also spies orcs gathering rings from the battlefield.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim ending explained

Hera rides onto Wulf's siege tower to challenge him and buy time for her people to escape through hidden caves. Her cousin Frealaf arrives with Helm's horn and armour, and the Dunlendings, believing Helm's ghost has returned, flee. Hera kills Wulf in their fight. Frealaf becomes king and the fortress is named Helm's Deep. Saruman offers his friendship to Rohan, and Hera leaves to roam the world, meeting Gandalf about the ring-hunting orcs.
