Silence recap

Silence (2016) follows two Portuguese Jesuits who travel into Japan, where Christianity is outlawed, to find a mentor said to have renounced his faith. Martin Scorsese directs and co-wrote it with Jay Cocks from Shusaku Endo's 1966 novel. Andrew Garfield plays Sebastiao Rodrigues, Adam Driver plays Francisco Garupe, and Liam Neeson plays Cristovao Ferreira, the missing priest. Their guide is Kichijiro (Yosuke Kubozuka), a drunken fisherman who once trampled on an image of Christ to save himself while his family died. In the coastal village of Tomogi the priests minister in secret to hidden Christians, until officials take hostages and the faithful are crucified in the surf. The priests separate. Kichijiro betrays Rodrigues to the authorities, and the Inquisitor Inoue (Issei Ogata) tries to make him apostatize, not by torturing him but by torturing Japanese believers in front of him. He sees Garupe drown trying to save prisoners. Silence comes after The Wolf of Wall Street and preceding The Irishman.

Silence ending explained

Silence ends with Rodrigues giving up his faith outwardly. Ferreira, now living as a Japanese scholar, urges him to apostatize to stop the suffering of Christians hanging over a pit, and Rodrigues hears what he believes is Christ's voice permitting him to step on the fumi-e. He does. He lives the rest of his life in Japan under a Japanese name, helping the authorities find Christian objects. At his Buddhist funeral, his wife places a small cross, given to him in Tomogi, into his hand in the coffin.
