Guy Ritchie's The Covenant recap
Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (2023) follows a US Army sergeant who returns to Taliban-held Afghanistan to rescue the interpreter who carried him to safety. Ritchie's fourteenth feature is a straight war drama. In 2018, Master Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) hires Ahmed Abdullah (Dar Salim), a former Taliban associate who turned on them after they killed his son. Ahmed proves his worth by spotting an ambush, and Kinley comes to trust him. A raid on an arms cache goes wrong, the rest of the unit is killed, and Ahmed hauls the wounded Kinley for days across the mountains on a makeshift cart. Back home in California, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family are in hiding with a Taliban bounty on them and that his visa is stuck. Unable to sleep, he flies back alone and enlists the private contractor Parker (Antony Starr) for support.
Guy Ritchie's The Covenant ending explained
The Covenant ends at the Darunta Dam, where Kinley and Ahmed run out of ammunition holding off the Taliban until an AC-130 gunship and Parker's convoy arrive. Ahmed's family boards a plane out of Afghanistan with their visas. Closing title cards report that after the Taliban took back the country, hundreds of Afghan interpreters who worked with US forces were killed and thousands remain in hiding.
