SpongeBob SquarePants recap

Created by the marine biologist turned animator Stephen Hillenburg, the show premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999. SpongeBob lives in a pineapple under the sea with his pet snail Gary, who meows. He loves his job as fry cook at the Krusty Krab, run by the money-obsessed Mr. Krabs, where the bitter cashier Squidward Tentacles, his next-door neighbour, wishes he could be left alone to play the clarinet. His best friend Patrick Star lives under a rock and is not bright. Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas, lives in an air-filled dome and does karate and science. Plankton, who runs the empty Chum Bucket across the street with his computer wife Karen, keeps trying to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula. SpongeBob fails his driving test with Mrs. Puff again and again, goes jellyfishing with Patrick, and drives Squidward to despair. Hillenburg ran the first three seasons, then stepped back after the 2004 film; Paul Tibbitt took over, and later Vincent Waller and Marc Ceccarelli. Later seasons lean harder into slapstick and surreal gags, with occasional live action and stop-motion specials. Hillenburg died in 2018, and the show has kept going since, with spin-offs about SpongeBob's childhood and Patrick's family.

How SpongeBob SquarePants ends

It has not ended: the show is still running in its 17th season, which premiered in June 2026, and Nickelodeon renewed it in June 2026 for an 18th and 19th season. There is no overarching story to finish, since nearly every episode stands alone and resets Bikini Bottom to normal. The 2004 film was planned by Hillenburg as a possible series finale before the network ordered more episodes.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie recap

Mr. Krabs opens the Krusty Krab 2 and names Squidward its manager instead of SpongeBob, calling him just a kid. Plankton puts his Plan Z into action: he steals King Neptune's crown, sends it to Shell City and frames Mr. Krabs, whom Neptune freezes. SpongeBob and Patrick set off in the Patty Wagon to bring the crown back within six days, with help from Neptune's daughter Mindy. While they are away, Plankton steals the formula and sells Krabby Patties with free bucket helmets that turn the town into his mind-controlled slaves. Dennis, a hitman Plankton hires, hunts the pair across the ocean trench. Ready to give up, they gain confidence from fake seaweed moustaches Mindy gives them. In Shell City, a diver they call the Cyclops catches them, and they discover the town is a gift shop that dries out sea creatures.

How The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie ends

SpongeBob and Patrick's tears short out the drying lamp, the sprinklers revive everyone, and they escape with the crown. David Hasselhoff swims them home, and they knock Dennis off along the way. They reach Bikini Bottom just before Neptune executes Mr. Krabs, and when Plankton mind-controls Neptune too, SpongeBob plays "Goofy Goober Rock" on guitar and frees everyone. Plankton is arrested, Mr. Krabs is unfrozen, and SpongeBob is made manager of the Krusty Krab 2.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water recap

On land, the pirate Burger Beard finds a magic book on Bikini Atoll that makes whatever is written in it come true, and begins reading it aloud to a flock of seagulls. Down in Bikini Bottom, Plankton attacks the Krusty Krab and fights SpongeBob over the Krabby Patty formula, and the formula vanishes. Without Krabby Patties, the town falls into an apocalyptic panic and blames SpongeBob, who believes Plankton is innocent. The two team up, build a time machine and travel through time, meeting Bubbles, a cosmic dolphin who watches over the universe, whom they get fired. Back in the present, the town is about to sacrifice SpongeBob when everyone smells Krabby Patties coming from the surface, and Bubbles, now grateful, lets them breathe on land.

How The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water ends

On a beach, the gang finds Burger Beard selling Krabby Patties from his food truck ship, having written the formula into the book. He maroons them on Pelican Island, and SpongeBob uses a page of the book to turn himself and his friends into superheroes. They chase Burger Beard through town, and Plankton, now a muscle-bound hero, helps SpongeBob win back the formula. The last page returns everyone to Bikini Bottom, the Krusty Krab reopens, and Plankton goes back to being Mr. Krabs's rival.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run recap

Plankton decides SpongeBob is the real reason he can never steal the Krabby Patty formula, so he needs him out of town. In the Lost City of Atlantic City, the vain King Poseidon uses snail slime to keep his skin smooth and wants a new snail, so Plankton kidnaps Gary and sends him there. SpongeBob and Patrick set off to rescue him in a car driven by Otto, a robot Sandy built. On the way they meet Sage, a tumbleweed spirit, in a dream western town, where they free a saloon full of zombie pirates from the cowboy demon El Diablo and Sage gives them a Challenge Coin he says will make them brave. In Atlantic City they ignore Sage's warnings, party all night, and get thrown in Poseidon's dungeon when they try to take Gary. Back home, the Krusty Krab falls apart without SpongeBob, and a guilty Plankton sets out with Mr. Krabs, Squidward and Sandy to save him.

How The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run ends

SpongeBob's friends reach Poseidon's show just before his execution and tell stories of how they met him at summer camp as kids, then stage a musical number while they grab Gary. Cornered, SpongeBob refuses to give up Gary even to save himself, and Poseidon admits he has no real friends. SpongeBob offers to be one, Poseidon drops his disguise and lets them take Gary home, and his other snails go free with them.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years recap

A CGI prequel set when SpongeBob is ten, spending his summer at Kamp Koral, a sleepaway camp in the kelp forest. Mr. Krabs owns the camp and is raising a baby Pearl on his own. Squidward is a junior counsellor who would rather be anywhere else and is put in charge of SpongeBob's cabin. Patrick is SpongeBob's best friend, and Sandy shares their cabin. Mrs. Puff is the scoutmaster and activities director. Plankton cooks in the camp kitchen, the Krusty Kanteen, while running a secret lab underneath it with Karen, still trying to take over the world. Episodes are mostly two short stories each, built around camp activities, Plankton's schemes going wrong under everyone's noses, Mr. Krabs cutting corners to save money, and SpongeBob's enthusiasm wearing down Squidward. It began on Paramount+ in 2021 before moving to Nickelodeon, and the flashbacks in Sponge on the Run show the same summer camp.

How Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years ends

There is no finale that wraps up the camp: episodes stand alone, and the series simply stopped after its second season, which began in 2024, at 39 episodes in total. It sits outside any larger plot, and nothing in it changes the main show. Its version of the camp is the one shown in the flashbacks of Sponge on the Run, where SpongeBob's friends recall meeting him there as kids, so the film is the closest thing it has to a follow-up.

The Patrick Star Show recap

A spin-off in which a young adult Patrick Star hosts his own variety show, broadcast from his family's house using equipment he has rigged up. The show within the show mixes sketches, fake commercials, games, cooking segments and interviews, and often collapses into chaos. His family make up the crew: his father Cecil, his mother Bunny, his grandfather GrandPat, and his adopted younger sister Squidina, a squid who is smarter than everyone else and really runs the production. Their pets are a sea urchin called Ouchie and a living toilet called Tinkle. Squidward's grandmother lives next door, and SpongeBob, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs and Plankton drop in as guests. The humour is more surreal and random than the main series, with alternate versions of Patrick, segments starring other characters, and running gags about his family. It is set at an unspecified time before the main series, when Patrick still lives at home. It premiered on Nickelodeon in 2021 and has become the longest-running of the spin-offs.

How The Patrick Star Show ends

It has not ended. The show is still running, with its fifth season airing in 2026 and a sixth season due on October 30, 2026; in June 2026 it was renewed for a sixth and seventh season. There is no overall storyline, so each episode ends with the household back to normal for the next broadcast, and the show sets up nothing for the main series beyond more of the Star family.

Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie recap

Sandy Cheeks works for a Texas lab, and when the lab scoops all of Bikini Bottom out of the sea in a giant bubble, the town and its people end up in Texas. Sandy and SpongeBob head to the surface to bring the town home, but a tornado blows them off course. At the lab, Mr. Krabs meets a human scientist, Phoebe, and the lab's new boss, Sue Nahmee, orders the two runaways caught. When Sandy is bitten by rattlesnakes, she calls on her family, a travelling circus act, who help them get to the lab, and her brother Randy teaches SpongeBob the family whistle. Sue tests her plan on Mr. Krabs, Squidward and Patrick: she wants to make Bikini Bottom's creatures breathe air and clone them as cuddly pets, because she has always wanted to hug fish.

How Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie ends

Sue traps Sandy in a hamster wheel cage and sends SpongeBob into her cloning chamber, where he splits into thousands of tiny SpongeBobs. Sue reveals she is a cyborg, and Sandy breaks free and beats her. The tiny SpongeBobs are put back together, and when the bubble holding Bikini Bottom cracks, SpongeBob uses the family whistle to call the Cheeks family, who help launch the town back into the sea. Bikini Bottom celebrates with a Cheeks family circus at the Krusty Krab.

Plankton: The Movie recap

Plankton fails yet again to steal the Krabby Patty formula and comes home to find his computer wife Karen has turned the Chum Bucket into a hit restaurant. He hates the idea and burns it down. Fed up with being ignored, Karen removes her empathy chip, turns into a giant robot and starts magnetising the town into a flying fortress to take over the world on her own. Plankton turns to SpongeBob for help, and SpongeBob hypnotises him to relive their history: Karen began as a calculator wired to a potato, built by a young Plankton, and the two plotted world domination together until a child at the beach ended their first attempt. Plankton's obsession with the formula started when he heard Mr. Krabs joke it could rule the world. Plankton builds a new robot from Karen's old parts, but she absorbs him, and the Gal Pals, Sandy, Pearl and Mrs. Puff, put Karen's empathy chip into his head.

How Plankton: The Movie ends

With the empathy chip, Plankton finally understands Karen, and he sneaks onto her airship with SpongeBob, Patrick and the Gal Pals. When Karen offers him the formula to send him away, Plankton tells her she was always his real secret formula, and they reunite and agree to conquer the world together. Patrick eats the potatoes powering the ship, it falls, and the town returns to normal. SpongeBob talks everyone out of attacking the couple, and Bikini Bottom celebrates.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants recap

SpongeBob is finally tall enough to ride a terrifying roller coaster but is too scared to try. Wanting to be as brave as Mr. Krabs, who claims he was a swashbuckling sailor in his youth, SpongeBob digs through Mr. Krabs's secret room of pirate relics and accidentally summons the Flying Dutchman. The ghost pirate is cursed to sail the Underworld until he can trade places with an innocent soul, and he picks SpongeBob, taking him and Patrick on as crew. The Dutchman sets SpongeBob a series of dangerous trials, which he passes by copying what he thinks Mr. Krabs would do, and turns him against Patrick. Mr. Krabs, sorry for telling SpongeBob he was not brave, follows with Squidward and Gary. When he catches up, the Dutchman makes him confess he was never a sailor, just a fry cook laughed at for blowing bubbles, and SpongeBob, feeling lied to, blows the Dutchman's horn. The curse passes to SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs, and the Dutchman becomes human and leaves for Santa Monica.

How The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants ends

The Dutchman's assistant Barb tells them the horn must be destroyed before sunset to break the curse. SpongeBob makes up with Patrick and goes to the surface with Mr. Krabs, where the Dutchman flees onto a roller coaster expecting SpongeBob to be too scared to follow. SpongeBob rides it, traps the horn in a bubble and pops it. The curse lifts, the Dutchman is demoted to the galley and Barb becomes captain. Then SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs realise they have left Squidward in the Underworld.
