The story

This is the first series to feature David Tennant as the tenth Doctor. He continues to travel with his companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), with whom he has grown increasingly attached. They also briefly travel with Rose's boyfriend Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke), and Camille Coduri reprises her role as Rose's mother Jackie. The series is connected by a loose story arc consisting of the recurring word "Torchwood". This is also the first series to be preceded by a Christmas special, which was commissioned to see how well the show could do at Christmas. The success of "The Christmas Invasion" led to the Christmas special becoming an annual tradition.

On a parallel Earth, Cybermen are created, and Mickey stays behind to fight them. The Doctor falls for Madame de Pompadour through time windows and faces a creature claiming to be the Devil in a black hole. Rose's father Pete is alive in the parallel world.

Doctor Who: Series 2 ending explained

Ghosts appear around the world, and Torchwood, now based in London's Canary Wharf tower, turns out to have opened a breach that lets in an army of Cybermen and four Daleks. The Doctor sucks them all into the void between worlds, but Rose is nearly lost with them, and Pete catches her and pulls her into his parallel world, where she stays with Pete, Jackie and Mickey. The Doctor says goodbye to her by projection on a beach in Norway, and a bride, Donna Noble, appears in the TARDIS.
