The story

Mater, the rusty but trusty tow truck from Cars, spends a day in Radiator Springs playing scary pranks on his fellow townsfolk. That night at Flo's V8 Café, the Sheriff tells the story of the legend of the Ghostlight, and as everyone races home Mater is left alone primed for a good old-fashioned scare.

Mater and the Ghostlight recap

Mater and the Ghostlight (2006) is a Pixar short in which Mater, the Radiator Springs tow truck, gets a taste of his own pranks. John Lasseter and Dan Scanlon directed it for the Cars DVD. Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) spends his days scaring the town, startling Luigi, Guido, Sally and Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson). When he mocks the Route 66 legend of the Ghostlight, Sheriff tells him it is real: a glowing blue orb that made a young couple vanish and hates clanking metal. Left alone in the dark, Mater jumps at junk piles and a firefly, and then a blue light appears behind him.

Mater and the Ghostlight ending explained

Mater and the Ghostlight ends with Mater racing through town in terror until he finds the blue light is a lantern Lightning and Guido tied to his tow cable as payback. Sheriff tells him the only thing to fear on Route 66 is his imagination, and Doc teases him about the Screaming Banshee. After the credits, Mater meets the real Banshee, a giant monster truck, warns it about itself and runs home. Mater's Tall Tales follows in 2008.
