When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.
Talk to Me recap
Talk to Me (2023) follows Mia, an Adelaide teenager grieving her mother, whose friends get high on possession by spirits through an embalmed hand. Danny and Michael Philippou direct their first feature. Grip the hand, say "talk to me" and you see a spirit; say "I let you in" and it takes over your body, as long as someone breaks the link within 90 seconds. Mia (Sophie Wilde), on the anniversary of her mother Rhea's overdose, goes first and loves it. Her best friend Jade (Alexandra Jensen) refuses to let her little brother Riley (Joe Bird) try, but when Jade steps out Mia lets him. A spirit claiming to be Rhea speaks through him, Mia lets it run past the limit, and Riley smashes his own face against the table and ends up in hospital, still possessed. Jade's mother Sue (Miranda Otto) bans Mia. The film stands alone for now.
Talk to Me ending explained
Talk to Me ends with Mia trapped on the other side. The spirit posing as Rhea convinces her that Riley must die to be freed; she stabs her father Max in a hallucination and wheels Riley toward a highway, then pulls back at the last second and is hit by a car herself. In hospital she sees Riley recovering, but no one can see her and she has no reflection. Reaching for a candle in the dark, she finds herself holding a stranger's hand at a party overseas, as someone says "I let you in." A24 announced a sequel, Talk 2 Me, in 2023.
