Mid90s recap
Mid90s (2018) follows Stevie, a 13-year-old in 1996 Los Angeles, who escapes a rough home by attaching himself to a crew of older skaters from a local shop. Jonah Hill writes and directs his first feature, shot on 16mm in a boxy frame. Stevie (Sunny Suljic) lives with his single mother Dabney (Katherine Waterston) and his older brother Ian (Lucas Hedges), who beats him. At the Motor Avenue skate shop he wins over Ray (Na-kel Smith), the most talented skater and the group's quiet anchor; the reckless partier of the crew (Olan Prenatt); Fourth Grade (Ryder McLaughlin), who films everything; and Ruben (Gio Galicia), who resents the newcomer. Nicknamed Sunburn, Stevie takes a bad fall from a rooftop, starts drinking and smoking, and gets his first sexual experience at a party. Dabney bans the skaters and Stevie defies her. The film stands alone.
Mid90s ending explained
Mid90s ends with a car crash and a homemade movie. At a shop party Ray chats up pro skaters about a sponsorship while Stevie fights Ruben, and the drunk partier insists on driving everyone to another party, then flips the car. Stevie wakes in hospital with Ian beside him, offering orange juice as a peace gesture. Dabney finds the crew asleep in the waiting room and lets them in. Fourth Grade plugs in his camera and plays the skate video he has been shooting all summer, its title card reading mid90s.
