Lady Bird recap
Lady Bird (2017) follows Christine McPherson, a Sacramento Catholic school senior in 2002 who calls herself Lady Bird and fights her mother over college. Greta Gerwig writes and directs, her solo directing debut. Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) wants an East Coast school her family cannot afford; her mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working double shifts, calls her ungrateful, and Lady Bird throws herself from the moving car and breaks her arm. She joins the school play with her best friend Julie Steffans (Beanie Feldstein), dates Danny O'Neill (Lucas Hedges) until she finds him kissing a boy, then chases the aloof Kyle Scheible (Timothée Chalamet) and a richer crowd, dropping Julie. Her father Larry (Tracy Letts), recently out of work, quietly helps her apply to schools out east. The film stands alone.
Lady Bird ending explained
Lady Bird ends in New York, where she has been admitted off a waitlist. Danny let the secret slip to Marion, who stopped speaking to her for the summer and would not even come into the airport to say goodbye, though she turns the car around too late. In her suitcase Lady Bird finds drafts of letters Marion wrote and threw away, which Larry saved. After a night drinking ends in hospital, she wanders into a church, then calls home and leaves a message for her mother, using the name Christine and thanking her.
