The story
Obsessive master thief Neil McCauley leads a top-notch crew on various daring heists throughout Los Angeles while determined detective Vincent Hanna pursues him without rest. Each man recognizes and respects the ability and the dedication of the other even though they are aware their cat-and-mouse game may end in violence.
Heat recap
Neil McCauley, a professional thief who lives by the rule of being ready to walk away from anything in thirty seconds, robs an armoured car with his crew. A new member, Waingro, murders a guard, and Neil fails to kill him. LAPD Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, whose obsession with work is wrecking his third marriage, takes the case. Neil's fence sets up a bigger score, and Hanna watches the crew. Neil falls for Eady, a graphic designer. Hanna pulls Neil over and the two men talk over coffee, admitting they will kill each other if it comes to it. Waingro betrays the crew to the money launderer Van Zant. The crew rob a downtown bank, and a tip-off leads to a huge street gunfight.
Heat ending explained
Most of Neil's crew are killed; Chris Shiherlis escapes, wounded. Neil kills Van Zant and is about to leave the country with Eady but goes back to kill Waingro at his hotel. Hanna spots him, and Neil abandons Eady. Hanna chases him across the LAX runways and shoots him, then holds his hand as he dies.
